“Cutting kiawes again. All he do is sleep. Must have been one hard night last night! This going be Kumuhea’s last night out, that’s for sure! Damn lazy ass, he just wait till I find out where he been going!” In Hailiʻōpua Baker’s KUPUA, two stories examine the dangerous ways hidden desires can disguise themselves as love or comfort. All while slowly depleting the life and well-being of the ʻohana. In both these stories, #kupua represent unseen forces preying upon a family’s sustenance and vitality beneath the cover of darkness. Restoring balance requires awareness, courage, and decisive action to expose and overcome these threats. Don’t miss opening weekend of KUPUA at #KumuKahua! Performances run Thursdays to Saturdays at 7 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. Save your seats now (before they sell out) at kumukahua.org!

Reyn: “So, what are we gonna do for our Director’s Note? It’s due in two days.” Wil: “What? Since when?” Reyn: “Since we were told that it was due two days from now. Read your emails.” Wil: “Well, you can talk about how you’re excited to do something other than historical fiction.” Reyn: “That’s true. It’s not that I don’t like historical fiction—I think my goals for anything I direct would be to show how the story we tell is reflected in today’s society. I feel like I’ve done that for the past two shows I’ve directed, and we’re doing that here. What about you?” Wil: “It’s nice to come back to directing Hawaiian folklore. The last one I did was MAUI THE DEMIGOD in 2010.” Reyn: “Oh yeah, I saw that one.” Wil: “You must have been young.” Reyn: “I’m still young.” Wil: “The clock is ticking. You’re right, though. There are a lot of things in KUPUA that are relevant to today. Addiction, growing up too fast, keeping the family together. It’s all there—just as relevant as it was when this premiered in 2001.” Reyn: “Yeah, timeless. You think we should mention something about the joy of co-directing?” Wil: “Is there a joy in co-directing?” Reyn: “I think there is.” Wil: “Well, there is if there’s good communication. And we’ve been doing pretty good, especially with our design team.” Reyn: “I know, I love them all. I love that we have choke folks who are familiar with Haili’s script on the team, and a couple of new ones that bring fresh eyes. Okay, I think that’s pretty good. So how are we going to put all this in a director’s note?” Wil: “I think we just did.” — KUPUA opens next weekend at #KumuKahua! Like directors W. Thomas Kāhele and Reyn Afaga say in their director’s dialogue: The clock is ticking

“Twenty-five years ago the original production of KUPUA premiered here at Kumu Kahua Theatre. The production shared the mo‘olelo ka‘ao (folktales) of ‘Ka Wahine i Ho‘āo i ka ‘Enuhe’ and ‘Puhi me Loli.’” “It was a privilege to reimagine and retell these ka‘ao in Pidgin/Hawaiian Creole English (HCE) through a contemporary lens that could be engaging for modern audience members. “The lessons embedded in ka‘ao are in a sense timeless, teaching us social and cultural values.” Haili‘ōpua Baker shares these thoughts and more in her playwright’s notes for KUPUA, opening in two weekends at #KumuKahua! Don’t miss this new production that presents two traditional stories which explore the perilous allure of hidden appetites—that masquerade as love or comfort while quietly consuming the life of the ʻohana. Performances of #KUPUA run Thursdays to Saturdays at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Opening weekend is selling out... “I just thought your sister was talking about something else? Maybe one different kine tide? Heh Honey Girl? So what, how’s the tide? Or the current, how’s the current? Pulling you in little bit? Pulling little bit, small kine? Heh? Little bit undertow maybe?” Join us in three weekends for KUPUA at #KumuKahua! Written by Hailiʻōpua Baker and directed by W. THE QUEEN’S WILL, by Sean T. C. O’Malley. late on posting this, but i basically blinked and the run was over. an incredible ride. i joked with harry that he needs to stop giving me historical dramas, but this one was so very special to me— it gave me a chance to work with three juggernauts on stage, and dig deeper into the actor/director process than i’d ever had before. in the journey to hold competing truths in one space, we found such amazing work to be done and incredible craft on their parts. and they enjoyed a beautiful run. thank you to my actors, who delivered solid gold on stage every single fucking night. congratulations, friends. this also gave me a chance to work with my brother reb after so many years— he was one of my first directors when i started out almost twenty years ago, but beyond that, we’ve known each other since we were kids running around halsey terrace. we grew up, and he got to see me grow in our community theatre scene. getting to direct him in his return to the stage was the most fulfilling job i’ve done in theatre. love you, brother. a fond mahalo to the house of la’anui for supporting us. big mahalo to the murphys, sher, and pam for being the best back-of-house crew we could ever ask for. big mahalo to our fabulous design team, y’all made a beautiful show. big mahalo to darryl for being my right-hand, keeping me sane every single day. and my most heartfelt mahalo to sean, for trusting me in this process, and letting me put his words on stage— genuinely, a privilege to mount the world premiere of this script. until the next one (opening in october)

“This play deals with an excruciating and pivotal moment in the life of an amazing woman. In 1918, Princess Theresa’s sensational trial for conspiracy and forgery was seen as the trial of the century, but a century later most people have never heard of it.
“A historical play is not a documentary. The events in the script are based on factual—if sometimes contradictory—historical accounts from newspapers, court filings, and personal correspondence. However, the written record is often silent on personalities and relationship conflicts; that’s where the playwright comes in. “I’ve tried to create plausible scenes, dialogue, and theatrical images that, when presented by actors live onstage, crystallize moments of truth. I hope that after seeing tonight’s performance, you will leave with some understanding of who these people were, what their world was like, and what these events meant to them.” Sean T.C. O'Malley shares these thoughts and more in his #playwright’s notes for THE QUEEN’S WILL, continuing this weekend at #KumuKahua! There are only three performances left for #TheQueensWill and all shows are SOLD OUT
However, if you’d like to join our waitlist in case some seats become available, you can join us at the theatre before each night’s show: Tonight’s and tomorrow’s performances begin at 7 p.m. and Sunday’s performance begins at 2 p.m. We hope to see you soon!
