For some people, a festival is a chance to escape real life and let their inhibitions run wild.
For me, it’s coming home.

I’ve been coming to Give Festival (Kimberley, as it was) since before I was born.
Mum came while she was pregnant with me, and we’ve been coming back nearly every year ever since.

These aren’t just festival friends. They’re chosen family.

Like any family, there’s been drama, breakups, fallouts, injuries, grief, new love, and more outfit changes than sunrises.
But somehow, we always end up back here together.

I was bullied at school, and getting to come here with my mum gave me a place where I could express myself without fear, without ridicule.
These are the spaces where I’ve found myself.

I also got the chance, as a child, to see my mum as her own person. I got to witness who she is to others and see that her character isn’t defined by the title of Mother.

It’s not the field… It’s the people, the memories, and knowing that feeling of belonging belongs to me.

I’ve met people who’ll be in my life forever.
I’ve found work, learnt new skills, and fallen in love with music, landscapes, and people.

I like to think that that feeling spreads out. That we carry that sense of home and knowing back into reality, and the mundane becomes spectacular in the eyes of those who’ve been seen in their weirdness and joined together to celebrate singularity in all its glory.

Here’s to frolicking the fuck out of these fields and finding home wherever you go!
