Today I’d like to give a big thank you to the Photo Arts Club of Toledo for having me Wednesday evening as a judge for this year’s annual photography contest. For 3 hours myself and the other judges graded hundreds of fabulous photos and assigned scores to them.

Using a 1-9 system in the categories of composition, technicality, and artistry(with 9 being the best), we eventually shortened the stacks to 3 winners in each category and ONE best of show champion. I personally graded high for technically challenging images and cleverly artistic frames. On the flip side, I unfortunately had to ding people for oversights like crooked horizons that even cell phone photographers should be able to do with even the most basic editing programs.

I can confidently speak for all of the judges when I say that, overall, the quality of the entrants work was much higher than any of us had expected. From multi-exposure, tracked and stacked images of the stars in amazing places to minimal macro shots that took simplicity to wonderfully pleasing new levels, we all walked away impressed at what some of our anonymous neighbors are out there creating.

I even found a nice surprise in the room at Secor Metropark, as one of my fellow judges has been as elusive to me as the owls I break my neck looking up for on photo walks through the woods. For all of the time I’ve spent in our Metroparks over these last six years, I’d NEVER met legendary @metroparkstoledo photographer and 40+ year staff member @artweber.photos in person. Art is someone all of us local outdoor photographers have been looking up to for years and it was an honor to finally make his acquaintance.

If you’d like to see the winners of the Photo Arts Club of Toledo’s annual photo contest, the Club will be presenting them in the gallery of the Secor room at Secor Metropark them starting tomorrow(03/08) from 10am-4pm and you’re all welcome to come see. Thanks again for having me you guys and I promise I’ll pass the torch to a qualified friend for next years contest. Keep on shooting my friends!📷🙌🏻

The students in Seder Burns’ class, Digital Image Making, explored AI image and video generation tools as part of a collaboration with doctoral student Mikeila McQueston at the School of Music, Theatre & Dance.

They made videos with the help of AI software which will accompany Mikeila’s performance of a science-fiction-themed opera aria that she composed entitled “Handsome Dead Thing” from Probably Future Statues.

Be sure to stop by and experience the designs at the Student Composer Concert:

We miss you Heather.
Photos of the installation at the Ann Arbor Art Center dedicated to my dear friend Heather Accurso, who died in Sept 2022. With flowers (and butterflies) from people who knew her. It will be up until June 8.
Thank you so much to Boris & Bea, Kristine, Joe, Teresa, Krysti, Ginger, Meagan, Abbi, Liz, Heidi, Hannah, Mia, Jessica, Kathleen, Ilana, Joan, Vince, Seder, and Christine 💙🙏

Also a collaboration with the sun - the temperature in the window exceeded the hot glue melting point (221 degrees apparently). So the 2nd photo is after many things fell apart and I rearranged it.

Hey there! I wanted to reach out on behalf of @gnarcyofficial . We've got some seriously rad jewelry lined up, and I reckon you'd be the ideal candidate to rock our latest collection of tough accessories!

If you dig it, we'd love to hook you up with three pieces on the house! Yup, you read that right – completely FREE!

Just shoot a DM over to our main account @gnarcyofficial (if you dont see a DM button, just reply to any of their stories), and our guy Shawn will sort you out pronto! But hey, don't sleep on it – spots are filling up fast, and we'd hate for you to miss out on the action! Cheers, mate! 🤙

“How might sea creatures evolve in response to human environmental influences in 30 years?”

Stamps instructor @burnsseder posed the question to his Studio 3D students this semester.

Students answered the question by designing creatures using 3D software. One student imagined a cat taken to the sea in response to rising sea levels. Another created a jellyfish that has evolved to resemble bottles that have become prevalent in the ocean. One student envisioned a turtle that has developed barbs to cut through trash, like six-pack drink rings.

The printed creatures are on view in a group exhibition titled Speculative Anthropogenic Evolution at the @creal_microgallery in Ann Arbor until November 25. Check it out!
