come say goodbye to drift this Saturday 💙

My favourite project from last year was a listening series called drift — we lie on the the floor and, for 90 minutes, you gave me your presence while we navigated sound and ate oranges and sometimes people brought off-cuts from their printing practices and helped me put out the mats. We went on journeys from the sparseness of tight percussion (I usually started the listening sessions with Ryoji Ikeda or something that reminded me of his work) and then blossomed into subwoofer sounds, material sounds, focusing on what a scratch on the medium does like when rendered across full volume on a 20.2 speaker system (thank u Richard Beaudoin for ur book Sounds As They Are). We were in churches, homes, but mostly in The Warehouse, which is Ash Fure’s sound lab that I get to help build and run at my job. Concrete floors are cold but people brought pillows and blankets to share. Eventually these sessions transformed into a concert series, with lots of free jazz and some ambient sprinkled in. Tomeka Reid brought her Duke Ellington tribute band one time, and played with Taylor Bynum and Dave Rempis another. Olivia Shortt rattled the building with bari sax and crows-and-cats video art. Poetmistry and I improvised a hardware-software electronics set. Caroline Davis and Rachel Bernsen did a duo and then the first Burrows performance happened. One time I made you guys listen to me do an entire ninety minutes about Ornette Coleman’s Science Fiction Sessions. There’s more I’m missing in the archives.

More than anything, if was really nice to be present with you all for an hour and a half on Thursdays. This is really what I do at home, just listening. If you ever made a poster, brought food or art to share, helped me stack away the mats, or brought a friend, you helped make it something very special 💙

This Saturday, we will say a proper goodbye to drift with a final show featuring @alicedoescomputermusic @burrows.wav and @fuzzyivyfu . Come thru, bring blankets, pillows, tea, whatever you like to say goodbye :) doors at The Warehouse at 8p 02/21. Suggested donation of $10 (sliding scale, NOTAFLOF). Thank u @margaretbonee for poster🪻
