KODIAK UTMB 2026 🇺🇸

From “And Then The Vulture Eats You” by John L. Parker, Jr

“Sometimes people could be disappointed to hear that much of an ultra-runner’s time is preoccupied with more or less the same concerns that occupy society in general: the problems of energy, food and water, shelter, health, self-defense, and waste.

The difference is that whereas the runner in his place of work is responsible for only a minuscule part of a section of a division of one of life’s innumerable problems, on the trail he takes responsibility for the entire universe of human survival, in microcosm.

The runner in his office may be an Assistant Manager of bottle capping machine maintenance for a Southwestern North Carolina regional bottling plant.

On the trail he is King of the World— the top decision maker, the nerve center coordinator in charge of all aspects of all things: the delivery of water and fuel to the cells; production and conservation of energy; regulation of heating and cooling; disposal of waste; and protection from external and internal threats.

In short, the cerebral cortex of an ultra-runner, or at least the left side of it, is a very busy center of autonomous government, with no time for boredom or vacuous thumb-twiddling”

Late this spring, Tim got me a journal that I decided to use as a my old-school training log. Strava does a great job at tracking running data, but I wanted more of my own story. All 72 runs of this training block were logged: mileage, route, and any anecdotes from the run. There are entries cursing the weather or questioning if my legs would ever not be tired, and there were other entries giving myself IRL kudos for completing workouts that scared the crap out of me or being grateful for company on a long run. This little creative project has been a really cool way to remind myself that despite Chicago not being the day I wanted, I still have so much I can be proud of and celebrate. Wins can be disguised in weird ways. And what a privilege it is to keep showing up, to keep chasing big goals, to keep pushing the definition of a finish line. Final thoughts on this training block are on slide 5 💭🐛

Also, want to recognize the special humans that made race day even possible and a little easier when it got so hard and so tempting to quit:
@lmatwotwo , who is always in my passenger seat and reminding me that the ultimate goal is to build a running LIFE.
@madinblack + @normralph , who chased me around the city and pieced me together when I was starting to lose belief in myself.
@tim_ethostraining , who completed a full training block with me so I wouldn’t have to go at it alone and was cheering before I even crossed the start line ❤️
