Keep dancing @stqpkiraradongjae 📍@ovantgarde
.
Recently Ovantgarde became the latest victim to South Korea's outdated policies regarding dancing and venues. The zoning and restrictions unfairly target indie venues. This is where new acts, experimental groups, anything outside of k-pop,can grow and connect with people. Korea has a wealth of music across genres, but audiences can't dance freely. Dancing is natural expression. Despite this being a persisting issue, this the community across Korea has been vocal and proactive in their support. The time is ripe for reform.

On August 18th, something new but familiar bubbled up across social media. Much-loved Busan venue Ovantgarde posted on social media that they are being forced to suspend operations for two months. In the post, they warn that for the remaining performances at Ovantgarde, audiences should refrain from dancing.

This is a common recurrence in South Korea. ChunHee, Oldies Tacos, and Basement in Busan are among the latest to face a similar ban. The law states that entertainment bars can hire acts, install stages, and allow dancing (a deliberately vague term) at the cost of stricter zoning, higher taxes, extra safety regulations, and restrictions on alcohol selling. Businesses, like the ones mentioned above, are generally classified as restaurants - meaning they can sell food and alcohol in most areas, but cannot facilitate entertainment or dancing.

This legislation corners fans, venues, and musicians alike. To run a bar that can legally offer entertainment, owners have to operate at a higher cost and within specific zones. It's a secret hidden in plain sight, and it often goes unenforced, but when venues are hit with bans, everybody loses.

What is a country saying when it's brimming with a creative scene but doesn't want people to enjoy it easily?

The one small silver lining here is that Ovantgarde's post was greeted with overwhelming support from fans and bands. Acts like Bandits, Social Club Hyangwu, Kirara and more showed solidarity with the iconic venue through posts, comments and shares.

As a regular collaborator with Ovantgarde, Debaser Magazine and our sister projects Busan Calling and Block Party would like to state our support for one of our favourite spaces. We'd also like to share some of our fave pics from our events with Ovantgarde.

A petition has currently passed the preliminary stages and will be ready to be signed by the public soon. We'll share details when it's available.
