Buttered Roll (BR), he/his/him, is a self-taught poet, performer, visual artist and not-so-complex carbohydrate. He has been reading and rearranging the written word since he was old enough to do so. Buttered Roll has self-published two books and had three solo visual art shows that have each met with moderate acclaim. In April 2026, BR created and printed a zine entitled “Buttered Roll at the Intersection of the Sacred and the Profane.” This zine was also met with moderate acclaim. Buttered Roll is working on too many projects to keep track of. Stay tuned!

😎☀️🏖️ I Know What You Did That Summer 🐚☀️🕶️

You spent a warm Friday evening with us in a living, breathing archive of our SMUSH Summer Residency Artists from the recent (and more distant) past! The artists dug up & showcased their visual art, readings, writings, zines, AND performances from their time in residency here & we had a blast catching up!

Get into the entertainment and installations, including a VERY special visit from our favorite G-H-O-S-T @gomotheghost 👻

Three months of Cecilia…

The summer is ending soon. I am feeling bittersweet about the changes that are awaiting me. The cold weather and shorter days have never suited me well. Before long, I will be hibernating again. This time, with an infant who reaches new milestones with each passing day and a seven-year-old who is maturing before my very eyes. That is what will keep me going.

My family blossomed this summer. We evolved and expanded in the most beautiful yet challenging ways, and I was reborn. I am getting to know myself and learning to appreciate this phase of becoming. Some days are easier than others, but I like who I am getting acquainted with. She is practicing a level of intentionality the old me did not possess.

Part of that intentionality is to keep reminding the world that we don’t talk enough about postpartum. We don’t talk about the binary of becoming and grieving ourselves at the same time; to feel so full yet still empty all at once; to love our babies while being so overwhelmed by caregiving.

I wouldn’t trade it for the world, though. Not even on my hardest day. And I am so grateful to have a partner who constantly reminds me to rest, to slow down, to take the time I need without any added pressure. I need that reminder. I need that kind of love. And for the first time in my life I’m allowing myself to receive it. 💓
