POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

A Tale of Two Books:

“The Rob Nichols one”

A story that needed to be told. I interviewed Rob for a magazine just after the release of Shrug’s second album in 2018, and loved listening to him talk. Then, pretty much out of the blue as far as I remember, I emailed him in Jul 2019 floating the idea of a book. It took him two months to email back, but we met for a coffee and thrashed out a few ideas about how it should be about all the people Rob has met along the way, as well as him.

I was conscious that much of Rob’s life predated the internet, and the digital strata that now provides, and that I needed to get these early stories written down before they were lost forever. We continued to meet for coffee every few weeks until Mar 2020, referencing some virus or other as we parted ways for the last time for a number of months. Luckily most of the ground work was done.

A local indie picked up the manuscript and it was published in Nov 2021 with a class launch night at Base Camp with Rob, hosted by Bob Fischer.

“The vinyl records one”

An itch that needed to be scratched. A local face had offered to introduce me to Press On Vinyl founder Danny Lowe at a gig in Dec 2021 but I declined, not wanting to be distracted by another big writing project. But /somehow/ a couple of months later I found myself pitching another book in a freezing cold, half-built galvanics lab in Middlesbrough, as a Cuban flag fluttered in the rafters above me.

A no brainer really. Again, I soon realised I was writing about the incredible people involved at Press On Vinyl, as I recorded the company’s first year in business. I wanted a book about music to be published by a record label and Butterfly Effect stepped up. We wanted to say it was the first book in the UK to be published by a record label but we would have been fibbing (a little bit – BE set up a publishing subsidiary to allow us to jump through all the hoops you need to jump through to get a book distributed).

With an incredible cover and some sharp editing, BE shipped copies to every continent on Earth, boosh!

Hypothetically, if I got some high quality A4 prints of Rob Irish’s incredible cover design of #pressonbook would anyone be interested in purchasing one at a reasonable price to be determined?

A proper venue for proper music - Angels Cut in Darlington does the simple things well, which makes it a great spot to catch original artists at the start of their careers. We caught up with Stephen Gill to find out more ...

⚙️ **MACHINER LIVE AT THE STUDIO** ⚙️

📅 **Saturday 10th October 2026**
🕖 **Doors 7:00pm**

Emerging from the post-industrial landscape of North East England, **machiner** have built a growing reputation for their immersive soundscapes, introspective lyrics and electrifying live performances.

Blending alternative rock, post-industrial electronica and darkwave, the Hartlepool trio create a powerful sonic experience driven by distorted guitars, pulsing synths and mechanical rhythms. Drawing inspiration from bands such as Nine Inch Nails, New Order and Depeche Mode, machiner transform emotion into something vast, cinematic and unforgettable.

Since first taking to the stage in 2022, they've become known for intense, atmospheric live shows that explore the space between human and machine, chaos and control, vulnerability and strength.
Their new debut album **Motion Waves** captures that unique sound, but it's on stage where machiner truly come to life, so come along to the last date of the Motion Waves summer tour...also their first hometown show since the album was released; and pick up a copy of the Butterfly Effect limited edition coloured vinyl before they're all gone.

Expect an evening of powerful music, immersive visuals and a live experience that will stay with you long after the lights come up.

🎫 Secure your tickets now and experience one of the North East's most compelling live acts.
