A non profit dedicated to cigarette litter prevention through education, awareness and a community cigarette butt litter recycling program

Keeping trash off the beach is important, but it only addresses part of the problem.

Single-use plastics are rarely recycled and often end up being incinerated, including at facilities like WIN Waste Innovations in Saugus, home to the oldest operating waste incinerator in the country. This underperforming facility is unable to meet modern emission standards due to its age and has to buy credits. And the problem doesn’t end there: the incineration process produces toxic ash that is disposed of in an unlined landfill in the Rumney Marsh.

We need to tackle the trash problem at its source. Let’s do our part by switching to reusable containers, composting organic waste, and reducing our reliance on disposable products.

3,779,556,200 pieces of cigarette butt litter found across America…that is a lot of litter! 😱

The filters found inside of cigarettes are made of plastic and aren’t biodegradable. It’s important that we do our part in the @cityofriverside and be more conscious of the litter we produce or encounter. If you need to safely dispose of Cigarette butts, you can do so in any of our partnered @terracycle receptacles around the city. 🚮

The collected cigarette waste is recycled and converted into amenities such as picnic tables, park benches, and even more receptacles! ♻️

Thank you for doing your part to Keep Riverside Clean & Beautiful!🌱

As a dog owner I’m always looking for my closest trash can… I’m sure you are too.
BUT are you also looking for extra litter you could scoop before you reach it?
Today was a good haul! 🚮 Scoop my dogs poop 💩 and cleaned up this picnic area for others to enjoy 🧺
The best part? It only took a minute to make a difference ⏰

We all picture litter as something big—a soda bottle, a fast-food bag, or an overflowing trash can.

But here’s the surprising part.

According to the Keep America Beautiful National Litter Study, 9 out of 10 pieces of litter are less than four inches in size.

So when we head into shopping center parking lots for a cleanup, we expect to find the obvious things.

Instead, what we find is hundreds of tiny pieces: cigarette butts, plastic fragments, straw wrappers, broken cutlery, bottle caps, and bits of packaging.

They’re so small that we barely notice them.

And that’s exactly the problem.

Because these tiny pieces don’t just disappear. They get washed into storm drains, carried into creeks and rivers, buried in the soil, and eventually make their way into our waterways, where they can break down into even smaller pieces and persist in the environment.

Somehow, we’ve become immune to seeing them.

A cigarette butt slips from our hand. A receipt blows out of our pocket. A wrapper falls even though there’s a trash can just a few steps away.

They’re tiny moments.

But together, they create a massive problem.

The next time you’re walking through a parking lot, don’t just look for the big pieces of trash.

Look down.

The smallest pieces are often the ones doing the biggest damage.

Let’s keep our beaches and dunes clean by embracing zero-waste solutions. Bring reusable containers and bottles, and pack out everything you bring in. Simply throwing trash away only addresses part of the problem, as plastic and packaging will still be incinerated, contributing to pollution and harming the health of nearby communities.

These cigarette butts were collected along Lynn Shore and Nahant Beach over the last few weeks.

Cigarette butts are not biodegradable. They are made of cellulose acetate, a form of synthetic plastic that can persist in the environment for years while leaching toxic chemicals into the sand and water.

Flicking a cigarette onto the ground is littering. It harms our beaches, pollutes our ocean, and threatens wildlife.

Please keep these toxic cigarette butts off our beaches and out of our dunes.

Day 10 - 07.07.2026

Little night walk with my dog. I have collected 200 pieces and if i roughly look at the cigarette butts I can believe they are 50% of the amount.

Catching a morning snack: a Western honey bee(Apis mellifera) foraging on White Sweet Clover (Melilotus albus).

As we celebrate the Fourth of July, let’s honor this country by caring for the beaches, dunes, and natural places that make it so special. While holiday celebrations often leave behind litter, damaged dunes, and illegal fireworks, we can do better by staying off the dunes, giving wildlife the space it needs and leaving the beach cleaner than we found it.

Single-use plastics are only used for a short moment, but they can persist in the environment for hundreds of years. Too often, bottles, wrappers, straws, and other plastic waste end up on our beaches and in fragile dune habitats.
Also, most plastics are not actually recyclable. When they are discarded, many ultimately end up being burned at one of the state’s waste incinerators, contributing to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
Choosing reusable bottles, bags, and containers is a simple way to reduce waste, protect our coast and keep our environment clean. If you’re visiting the beach, please always pack out everything you bring in.
And as always, please stay off the dunes and keep beach gear off dune vegetation. These sensitive habitats help protect the beach, support wildlife, and deserve our care. 🙏
