People assume I call the US Open ‘my Christmas’ because I am obsessive about tennis. That is true, but the real reason I love it is the community. I get to see friends from all walks of life and that’s what is special. Thank you @bvahaly for being an amazing friend and host. You are killing it as @usta President of the Board. Thank @lcolker for being such an amazing friend and travel partner. Thank you @lionessrx for leaping into action when it mattered most to support our girl @cocogauff. Amazing to see you @laurens811 and @lisaminihan ♥️♥️♥️ And mom!!!! I made it! I was on tv 🤣until next year folks ✌🏽

Congratulations to our colleague Brian Vahaly, Brown Advisory senior advisor and USTA (@usta) chairman and president, for putting on an outstanding tournament.

From exciting matches to meaningful connections to unforgettable moments--it was a memorable way to celebrate the sport and spend time with our community. Thanks to everyone who joined us!

Took my honey deuce to the @usopen yesterday 💙 (and had my yearly reunion with @marcellohdz) Thank you to the @usta and Brian Vahaly for hosting us. Sabalenka and Rybakina fought so hard and had us on the edge of our seats the entire match. Congrats to both of you ladies! Can’t wait for next year 🎾

NOW…the BIG question:
WHO YOU THINK IS WINNING TODAY AND LIFTING THAT 🏆 ?

🎾 MY EXPERIENCE AT THE US OPEN WATCHING THE LEGACY CONTINUE

Being at the US Open last year meant something very different to me.

I wasn’t simply watching tennis. I was watching a legacy unfold that, for my family, reaches back to Jimmie McDaniel and 1940.

Jimmie helped lay the foundation for the generations of Black tennis players who followed. His historic 1940 match against Don Budge challenged the racial barriers of American tennis at a time when Black players were excluded from the sport’s biggest stages.

Then came Althea Gibson, who broke through at the U.S. Nationals and became a Grand Slam champion. Then Arthur Ashe, who became the first Black man to win the US Open.

And now, standing inside Arthur Ashe Stadium, I watched Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton carry that legacy into another generation.

For me, that is what made this US Open so powerful.

Jimmie McDaniel. Althea Gibson. Arthur Ashe. Frances Tiafoe. Ben Shelton.

Different generations. Different moments. But one continuing journey.

As Jimmie McDaniel’s great-nephew and Founder of The Jimmie McDaniel Tennis Legacy Foundation, I felt an enormous sense of pride watching the seeds planted more than 85 years ago continue to grow.

The history didn’t end in 1940. We are watching the next chapter being written right now.
