In the spring of 2021, Tulsa was the center of the news universe due to the centennial of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. There were so many impactful programs and community gatherings around the anniversary. One small contribution we made was to bring together @damonlindelof and @cordjefferson for a chat @bwslegacyfest with myself and @thebwstimes editor @nehemiahdfrank. Their HBO adaptation of Alan Moore’s WATCHMEN recenters the story in Tulsa. The first episode features a gut-wrenching recreation of the Massacre and the destruction of Black Wall St.

I had the honor of sitting down with Mr Willie at Tee’s Barber Shop in Tulsa’s historic Greenwood District

For decades his chair has represented more than barbering. It represents mentorship family community and a legacy that continues to live on. Greenwood became one of the most prosperous Black communities in America and became known as Black Wall Street

In 1921 Greenwood was targeted in an act of racial terrorism that destroyed homes businesses and lives. Melanin residents were killed displaced and detained while members of law enforcement participated in or enabled the terrorist attack

Eyewitnesses also reported airplanes flying over Greenwood during the destruction dropping bombs on US soil.

The terrorist group could not destroy the purpose!

The entrepreneurship survived
The community survived
The legacy survived

More than a century later people like Mr Willie are still carrying that legacy forward

“My purpose is to be all that I can be and all that the Lord would allow me to be to help my family and my community and that helps the world” -Mr Willie

A question I posed to a recent financial therapy client:

“How would it feel to set a boundary about what does and doesn’t align with your goals this season?”

Her eyes were opened 🤲🏾

“Actually, I can’t make it. It doesn’t align with my values for this season,” is a complete sentence. And it might be the most powerful financial decision you make this month.

That’s the work we do inside Mind & Money coaching 👉🏽 building a financial life that aligns with your values AND increases your budget. If you’re ready for that kind of support, tinyurl.com/chatfinancialtrauma or click the link in bio 🔗

(Shoutout to @calmand.co for the @bwslegacyfest activation and @fuelfittraining who gave my nervous system exactly what it needed to show up for this work✨)

Some moments are bigger than a concert.

I want to sincerely thank Tiffany Crutcher, the Terence Crutcher Foundation, and the entire Black Wall Street Legacy Fest team for the opportunity to document such an incredible event.

This experience was especially meaningful because my son, CJ Young Jr., was able to stand beside me and photograph one of his favorite artists, Fantasia. As a young photographer building his own path behind the camera, he even had one of his images shared by Fantasia’s team—an unforgettable moment that continues to inspire him.

From the powerful performance to the unforgettable connection with the audience, Fantasia reminded everyone why her voice, passion, and authenticity continue to resonate with people around the world.

But one of the most memorable moments of the night came when a young girl was invited to share the stage. Watching her live out a dream in front of thousands and seeing the pride and emotion on her father’s face reminded us that Legacy Fest is about more than entertainment. It’s about inspiration, opportunity, community, and creating memories that last a lifetime.

Thank you, Greenwood, for another unforgettable celebration of culture, excellence, and legacy.
