Everyone has a story of a quilt, here’s (one of) mine.

Just over 33 years ago, Ron Haefka, my mom’s cousin, died of brain cancer. Or at least that was my family’s name for the AIDS-related illness that took him. I was just 3-years old and none the wiser.

For as much as I gripe about social media, a late-night Google search in 2022 led me to a truth about Ron hiding in plain sight from my extended family. I had moved to NYC recently and was looking to handpick a guardian angel, of sorts, and one who knew his way around the city. “Ron Haefka gay NYC” was all I typed. The first link was a post from @theaidsmemorial with a photo of Ron smiling by a pine tree, a beautiful eulogy by his former lover and friend, @davidgroff, and the name of Ron’s lover at the time he passed, @bycadiente.

With these two men’s names I started a journey I am still on. Several emails, childhood photos with Ron to prove I was not a bot, and many meaningful and difficult conversations later, I now know a handful of Ron’s friends, lovers, and survivors. I call them my elders. And I get to meet two more tonight.

There is so much more to say (which I will) but right now I want to share the quilt. It was an honor to design this piece to celebrate Ron’s life. My family is from Ohio, and quilters will spot the Ohio star constellating the right half. On the left is a contemporary Hawaiian star applique, honoring Ron’s final lover’s home and the trip they took there together. Its radial flower mimics the paper mulberry leaves I see walking my dog, Dolly, in Brooklyn.

Between the motifs are the moving writings of Tom, Patti, and David, and the gorgeous drawings of Ron by Leonard, each in their own handwriting and embroidered by @catemac, the wonderful soul (and textile artist) who pieced and quilted it. My longest friend, Erica, did the honors of photographing it.

Quilts are political and queer objects, as much as they are art and shelter. This panel will soon join The NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt archives in SF, the largest piece of community folk art in the world. (You too can still create and donate panels!)

If this resonates with any of your experiences, send me a note!
