Before we get too deep into the new year, let's recap 2023!

1. We started with January term study abroad in Italy, learning about trend forecasting in Milan, Florence, and Rome with @patternprof.

2. Throughout the year, our students had many opportunities to learn from industry insiders closer to home, too. As one example, Prof. Sandy Swan's spring semester Visual Merchandising class visited @grace_loves_lace.

3. In its second year, Katie Leadership Impact continued to offer opportunities for fashion students to develop leadership skills through classes, mentoring, field visits, internships, and a speaker series. In March, St. Kate's welcomed @roya.mahboob_ and @afghania_barakzai whose courageous efforts to educate women and girls in Afghanistan inspired us all.

4. We cheered on our alumni as they achieved success in their post-St. Kate's careers. In April, @michelle.dolan showed at @fashionweekmn, among others.

5. Our current students have also made us proud! At Katwalk, St. Kate's annual fashion show, they showed off their creativity, skill, and talent.

6. This was a significant year for faculty activities as well. In June, @stkatesprofessor shared her expertise at the Who Made My Clothes? panel discussion sponsored by @theapparelmentor.

7. On the community engagement front, the Fashion Design and Merchandising Department participated at @artistscirclemn's Art at St. Kate's fair with displays, prizes, and hands-on fun.

8. Also in July, our biggest high school outreach event of the year took place with the second iteration of Fashion Summer Workshop. Over the course of a week, students explored careers in fashion while learning design principles and merchandising techniques.

9. In fall semester, the Fashion Design and Merchandising Department partnered with @bo_podgorski on a Citizen Katie project sewing modified sweatshirts that can be worn by patients undergoing dialysis. The project showed that fashion can be of service, too!

10. Finally, our Fashion Advisory Board of industry professionals convened in the fall semester to provide advice, guidance, and support for the success of our programs, and another year of impactful learning in 2024!

👗✂️ St. Kate’s fashion students are turning creativity into sustainable style! 🌿💫 The Patternmaking class embraced the challenge of crafting a collection using upcycled materials. Sourcing materials from local favorite reuse store Art Scraps, they are at work on an eco-friendly masterpiece - and with only $35 spent on fabrics, ribbons, and even CDs, they’re under their budget, too! 🛍️🎶 Get ready to witness their sustainable Kaleidoscope collection at Katwalk on April 27, 2024. 📅🌟

In Prof. Sara Wilcox's History of Fashion class, students worked in teams to select a 20th century decade and pull a garment from St. Kate's historic dress collection to feature on a mannequin. They then wrote labels to provide historic context for each garment. The mannequins are on display on the lower level of Fontbonne.

👀 Behind the scenes at our new exhibit, "Turn of the Century Couture Embellishments, 1890-1930," curated by Fashion Design and Merchandising Department Student Executives Veronica Wakefield and Dao Lee.

👗 This semester, Veronica and Dao have gotten to know our historic dress collection well while helping to clean, document, and store these treasured pieces. They installed the new display just before the Thanksgiving holiday break.

💛 Veronica Wakefield is a senior fashion design major. She is excited by historical eras of fashion and how they influence and repeat in today's clothing. She's inspired by Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood, and timeless chic style.

💜 Dao Lee is a junior double majoring in fashion design and fashion merchandising. Her favorite part about fashion is the creative freedom to design and express whatever you want through dress. She's interested in learning more about embellishment techniques used by couture and bridal designers.

So cool to see fashion students' work featured in Ariston, St. Kate's literary and arts magazine! 🛼

Dao Lee's "I am a Hmong Woman" is a diptych of drawings in graphite. ✍️ Her "In Full Bloom" ephemeral collage was originally made for the Fashion Illustration and Portfolio Development class. 🍁 Makayla Stinson's "Lost Girl" is a mixed media and photography piece. 📷

Ariston is looking for submissions for its 2024 issue! They accept short stories, poetry, and any and all visual arts. The deadline is December 1, 2023. Visit taplink.cc/ariston or contact ariston@stkate.edu with questions.
