Teeth: pristine.
Tongue: absolutely freelancing. 😂

You can brush twice a day, clean between your teeth and have your fluoride toothpaste nailed… but if you’re completely ignoring your tongue, you’re missing a pretty major part of your mouth. 👅

Tongue coating can hold bacteria and debris and contribute to bad breath, so once a day, give it a gentle clean from back to front.

And I do mean gentle.

This is a tongue. Not a baking tray. 🙃

No complicated routine. No aggressive scraping. Just another small habit that can make a difference.

Because you’re cleaning your mouth, not just your teeth.

And THAT is Dental Maxxing. 😎🦷

Did you know your tongue is one of the biggest reservoirs of bacteria in your mouth? 👅

The tiny grooves and papillae on the tongue can trap bacteria, food debris and dead cells. As these bacteria break down proteins, they produce volatile sulphur compounds (VSCs) - one of the main causes of bad breath. 🦠

This is why tongue cleaning is such an important (and overlooked) part of oral hygiene.

Research has shown that adding tongue cleaning to your daily brushing routine can significantly reduce tongue coating and the sulphur compounds associated with bad breath.

Systematic reviews have found that tongue scrapers are more effective than toothbrushing alone for reducing oral malodour and bacterial build-up on the tongue _(Trent L Outhouse et al. Gen Denbt.2006 Sep-Oct).

In today’s video I am looking at plastic and metal scrapers. Whilst plastic scrapers are popular I personally find them difficult to clean and not the most eco-friendly option.

Copper (naturally antibacterial) and stainless steel scrapers are effective, resilient and recyclable.

Whilst there are many metal options available my favourites are the “Tooth Angel” @toothangeluk copper scraper and “Dr Reena Wadia” @bydrreena stainless steel scraper. Look for a scraper with a thick smooth metal end to avoid that sharp feeling and a “U” shape as opposed to “Y” enables you to cover more surface area of the tongue.

BRITISH DENTAL CONFERENCE & DENTISTRY SHOW 🦷

Spoke on something that doesn’t get nearly enough airtime: periodontal disease in children and adolescents.

5 takeaways:
🦷 It’s more common than we think. 60% of 12-year-olds have visible gum inflammation. 77% of 19-year-olds have measurable attachment loss. This is not a niche problem and needs attention.
🔍 We’re missing the risk factors hiding in plain sight. Puberty, stress, crowding, mouth breathing, high frenal attachments, fixed orthodontics, vaping — all amplify periodontal risk in young patients. We screen for caries. We need to be asking the same questions about their gums.
⏳ Gingivitis in children is the only periodontal condition that is completely reversible — but only if we catch it. This is the window. Once we cross into attachment loss, we are managing, not curing. The child sitting in your chair right now may still be on the right side of that line.
🚨 Some conditions announce themselves in the gingiva first. Leukaemia. Papillon-Lefèvre syndrome. Leukocyte Adhesion Deficiency. Early-onset, disproportionate periodontal destruction in a child is a red flag — not just for perio, but for what might be happening systemically.
🧠 Psychology matters as much as technique. Tell-show-do. Positive reinforcement. Autonomy for teenagers. The shoelace rule for brushing independence. How we speak in the surgery shapes whether any of this actually happens at home.

The best periodontal appointment you’ll ever do is the one where a five-year-old leaves knowing how to brush.

On World Gum Health Day, it’s important to recognise that gum health extends beyond the gums.

Inflammation and recession expose dentine, increasing sensitivity and making effective oral hygiene harder to maintain. When brushing becomes uncomfortable, consistency drops.

Preventive care isn’t just about what patients use, it’s about whether they can use it consistently and comfortably.

Encouraging to see clinicians like Dr Reena Wadia continuing to bring gum health and patient behaviour closer together.

At BioMin®, we focus on supporting comfort, because better comfort drives better compliance.

“Patients don’t reject treatment.
They reject confusion.”

Speaking at the @dentalshowcase on mastering periodontal communication.

If patients don’t understand the disease, they won’t prioritise the treatment.

Clear explanations → better behaviour change → better long-term outcomes.

Always inspiring to connect with colleagues who care about raising standards in periodontal health.
