Following a summer of festival appearances, JUNO-nominated alt-pop band @thisisvalley are entering a new era with a brand-new album and world tour spanning Canada, the U.S., the UK and Europe.   With over 1.2 billion global streams, the band recently celebrated their first No. 1 at Canadian alternative radio with “Vending Machine.”   Their fourth studio album, Do You Need To Be Entertained?, arrives January 15, ahead of their world tour kicking off in Quebec City on February 4. It’s not easy being a woman in a male dominated industry. But with the fight I face on the daily, comes power in knowing I’m showing other women they can too. It’s the daily assumption that I “need” the work, or that I’m not experienced enough without anyone asking what my experience has been. It’s the assumption that I’m working for someone else and not myself. It’s being mistaken for the assistant, the junior, or someone’s plus-one when I’m the one leading. It’s having my gear and technical knowledge questioned or tested. It’s being offered lower rates for the same work and getting more pushback when I negotiate. It’s fewer chances at lead roles, being talked over, and watching my ideas get credited to someone else. And it’s the assumption that I must have gotten here some way other than my work. While these added barriers for women exist today, I fight for women to have equal access to roles, to equal rates, and to have their foot in the door. I’m showing other women that they can, in fact, do it too.
