🎵 ED RUSH, OPTICAL & FIERCE – CUTSLO (LOKUSTE MIX)
📀 Prototype Recordings | PRO 014 | 1998

☣️ CUTSLO. ALIEN GIRL. ON THE SAME RECORD. 🤯

Honestly, what a ridiculous 12-inch. Either side would have justified buying it.

For me, Cutslo captures everything I love about this era. The patience in that build. That filthy bassline exposed on its own. Then the Amen comes crashing in. Still absolutely devastating.

🧬 DEEP VAULT DETAIL: “Cutslo” is an anagram of “Locust”, the Ed Rush & Fierce track from 1997’s The Prototype Years. This reworking added Optical to the credits and sampled dialogue from Predator 2. Even the atmosphere had teeth.

🇯🇪 VANGUARD ARCHIVES: We’ve had Ed Rush over to Jersey many times over the years. Always a privilege to host someone whose records meant so much to us. Huge respect to Optical, Fierce and Grooverider’s Prototype too.

🖤 ONE OF THE REASONS I’LL ALWAYS KEEP MY VINYL.

🎵 TRACE – SONAR
📀 Prototype Recordings | PRO 012 | 1998

This takes me right back. That creeping tension, those drums, then the bass. Absolutely lethal. Exactly why I loved this darker era so much.

🇯🇪 VANGUARD ARCHIVES: Grooverider was the baddest DJ in the rave for me. He’d take you on a journey, get you completely locked in, then drop something so lethal the whole dance would lose it. Nobody did it quite like him.

🧬 DEEP VAULT DETAIL: Trace later admitted measuring his own productions against it, asking himself: “how am I going to make a tune as big as Sonar?” Even its creator felt the weight of this one.

🖤 Maximum respect to Trace, Grooverider and Prototype. Proper pioneers.

🎵 M.I.S.T. – BARRACUDA
📀 Revolve:r | REVOLVER001 | 2003

This one means a lot to us. Marcus Intalex & ST Files showing their darker side, with that unmistakable groove running through it.

🧬 DEEP VAULT DETAIL: Barracuda launched Revolve:r, alongside Freaky on the flip. The label’s original newsletter named High Contrast among its supporters, a lovely connection to our own memories.

🇯🇪 VANGUARD ARCHIVES: We were blessed to bring Marcus to Jersey for an amazing event alongside Calibre. Afterwards, we spent hours at my friend’s house, spinning records and talking drum & bass with them both. Having your hero’s whose music meant so much to us there, just sharing that love of records… that stays with you.

🖤 Big love to ST Files. Always remembered, Marcus 🕊️

🎵 RONI SIZE / REPRAZENT – TRUST ME
📀 Talkin’ Loud | TLX 15 | 1996

🔊 THOSE FIRST STABS STILL DO IT FOR ME.

This is the kind of record I could talk about all night.

That bassline has so much personality. The drums roll, the whole thing swings, and there’s enough space to hear every little detail. I know what’s coming and still look forward to the drop. Every time.

Its original commercial vinyl release was the D-side of the double-12″ Reasons For Sharing EP in 1996, before appearing on New Forms in 1997.

And Roni says he made it in about an hour. 🤯

He included it as a DJ tool. Even the sample on the original is slightly out of time. That detail makes me love it more: the feel was there, and he knew when to leave it alone.

🧬 DEEP VAULT DETAIL: Around 2010, Andy C helped bring Trust Me back into circulation through his sets. Roni admitted:

“I started playing it again because Andy was playing it!”

A DJ reminding the producer to reach for his own record again. I love that.

🇯🇪 VANGUARD ARCHIVES: We’ve brought Roni to Jersey countless times, from our early Terminology events through to Vanguard. Having someone whose records meant so much to us come and play our own nights will always feel special. This tune belongs in that story and sharing it here brings it all back.

🖤 NEARLY 30 YEARS ON. I’M STILL TURNING THIS ONE UP.

🎵 D.KAY & DJ LEE – MANIPULATE THE UNIVERSE
📀 Advanced Recordings | ADVRSK5 | 2003

🌌 THE RECORD THAT PROVED SPACE COULD CARRY MORE WEIGHT THAN NOISE.

Some records dominate a room. This one changes its dimensions.

Celestial pads, disembodied voices, rolling breaks and sub-bass felt more than heard. D.Kay and DJ Lee created tension without aggression allowing atmosphere, restraint and emotion to become the record’s true source of power.

🤯 Manipulate The Universe was the final track on the double-vinyl Sektor Five EP, following heavyweight contributions from Q Project, Baron and Total Science. On paper, it was the D-side. In reality, it became the record’s hidden universe.

The timing was perfect: D.Kay was named Best Breakthrough Producer at the 2003 Knowledge Awards, while DJ Lee brought the instincts of a selector shaped by Speed and the legendary Metalheadz Sunday Sessions.

🧬 DEEP VAULT DETAIL: Sample detectives traced one of its ghostly fragments to Led Zeppelin’s I Can’t Quit You Baby. The pair revisited the track with a 2006 remix—but the original’s extraordinary sense of space remains impossible to reproduce.

🇯🇪 Vanguard Archives: This deeper sound travelled with us far beyond Jersey. We had the privilege of playing alongside D.Kay at Amsterdam’s legendary Cheeky Monday, a personal connection to an artist whose music proved that Drum & Bass could carry immense weight without sacrificing its soul.

🖤 MORE THAN TWO DECADES LATER… IT DOESN’T SOUND OLD. IT SOUNDS OUTSIDE TIME.

🎵 LOGISTICS – INSIDE MY SOUL
📀 Hospital Records | NHS 81 | 2004

💙 THE D-SIDE THAT BECAME LIQUID GOLD.

At just 23, Cambridge producer Matt Gresham was helping reshape soulful Drum & Bass.

Inside My Soul closed the four-track Spacejam EP. It wasn’t the title track or the lead cut, it was tucked away on the final side of the double vinyl.

Yet it became one of Logistics’ defining records.

Soft-focus chords. A haunting vocal fragment. Rolling drums and a sub-bass that carries emotion as heavily as pressure. It captured the balance that made Logistics so special: deeply musical, but built for the dancefloor.

🔥 This was an important breakthrough period. After beginning alongside his brother Nu:Tone as Nu:Logic, Logistics developed a sound where soul, jazz and melody could exist inside heavyweight club music. Hospital Records gave that vision the perfect home.

🧬 DEEP VAULT DETAIL: The original Spacejam EP ran:

Spacejam / Kaleidoscope / Together VIP / Inside My Soul.

Just months later, Hospital commissioned Friction & Nu Balance to rebuild Inside My Soul for Weapons Of Mass Creation 2 hardening the drums and bass while preserving its emotional core.

The original was later selected for Hospital’s official 15th-anniversary retrospective: confirmation that the hidden D-side had become part of the label’s history.

🇯🇪 Vanguard Archives: This is the balance we have always championed in Jersey music with enough soul to stay inside you and enough weight to transform a dancefloor.

🖤 MORE THAN TWO DECADES LATER… IT STILL SOUNDS LIKE HOME.

🎵 LYNX – DISCO DODO
📀 Creative Source | CRSE 052 | 2007

🦤 THE ODDITY THAT BECAME A BLUEPRINT

No huge vocal. No predictable drop. Just a wildly original kick pattern, twisted funk and bass pressure that made dancefloors move differently.

Before the vinyl even landed, Fabio opened his BBC Radio 1 “Best of 2006” show with it. After a long life on dubplate, Disco Dodo was finally released in November 2007 and became one of Creative Source’s biggest records of the era.

🔥 At a time when DNB was experiencing a commercial surge, Lynx delivered the perfect counterweight: minimal, eccentric, underground and completely unmistakable.

🧬 DEEP VAULT DETAIL: Lynx later called the track “a bit of a fluke,” but admitted it opened doors and showed another way drum & bass could sound. Its distinctive, pounding kick rhythm was copied so widely that it effectively became part of the genre’s breakbeat vocabulary.

Fabio’s Creative Source the label that introduced Calibre and helped define liquid funk was its perfect home. CRSE 052 was backed by Wonder, featuring Ciah.

🇯🇪 Vanguard Archives: This is the kind of fearless, leftfield record we have always championed in Jersey music that ignores the formula yet completely controls the room.

🖤 NEARLY 19 YEARS LATER… THE DODO IS STILL NOT EXTINCT.
