It's so nice to get back to some physical making again!
Here's me pouring my last silicone mould for a piece of work I am doing on working beyond models of disability.
The idea is not totally developed yet, as ever with me...part of the reason for making physical objects is to help me work through ideas. But essentially I am making a playful resource for researchers working with disabled people and/or disability theory.
I will keep you all posted!

Reflection on autoethnography. Often people mistake our stories as ultimate truths, real accountings of events that describe all the facets of each experience shared. When in fact, often, certainly in my case. Those stories are carefully constructed versions of events, that are told in a way that reflects on who is listening.

Artwork all made by me and not AI generated. The iceberg and sun are scrunched up pieces of paper Photoshopped into the right shape.

This is a much larger poster so here is the text you cannot see on Instagram:

SUN: Listening is not a passive act. Information is coloured by the unique lens of the listener’s own experiences, transforming into an altered version of itself.
EXPOSED ICEBERG: The things I actually say or write about, a carefully crafted version of events. Impactful enough to be novel, important and considered worth saying… Perhaps just passed what others would dare to say.
SUBMERGED ICEBERG: Here is where the real pain lives—the dark and vulnerable realities of my experiences and how strongly they affect me. The pits are so deep that sometimes even I am not fully aware of what they are. Comments, looks, patterns that I cannot address because I have no proof, nor would it be safe for me to do so. The microaggressions, dismissed in the gaslight when I do speak of them. They don’t go away; they stay and sit, untold, unsurfaced. The story is only ever partly told.

We are super excited to announce that our founder Abi Chapman is speaking at the Model to Realities: Nuanced Perspective on Disability Symposium at the University of Brighton.

As a member of the Disability Culture Research Group, Chapman is delivering a talk on exploring the theory of policy versus the reality of disabled living experience and how we may work to address the gaps of inequality.

Using her own story, Chapman will navigate the nuances of disabled living and healthcare, and touch on how we can enact change to improve the disabled experience.

We are proud to announce this is both an in person and virtual event - so why not sign up? The link to register is in our bio!

Reflecting on the CDH PGR Symposium that was held at Mithras House on the 28th of March.

With three panels on varied themes, the event showcased research of the University’s PGR community, their work engaging with multiple strands under the ambit of Design History. From sustainable design practices and technology intervention, decolonisation and museum studies, to textile arts and material culture – the symposium embraced all of these and more.

As part of our International Women’s day event, our uplifting hosts ran an Intersectional Feminist Zine workshop and a ‘Rewild Your Feral Self’ visual statements workshop- discovering freeing ways from dominant patriarchal systems and domestication of modern society. Check out the crossing cultures blog in bio for more details🧡

For IWD, I along with colleagues from the University of Brighton hosted a workshop and talk, working together with staff and students to create collages that focused on Intersectional Feminism to reflect this year’s theme #inspireinclusion. A term coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw that recognises how “various forms of inequality often operate together and exacerbates each other”

An afternoon of making, sharing discussions and allowing space

This endeavour wouldn't have happened without these wonderful humans. Research for sense-making will always be deeply collaborative whatever the context. Feeling very cared for and entangled with my thinking-buddies #Mixtape
