Extremely excited that Royalty premiered yesterday at Outfest! You can stream it for the next 48 hours on Outfest’s website and the Outfest Now app in the When I Grow Up block!

“Royalty” is a film about Jax, a Non-binary teenager, exhausted by always having to take the high road. In an effort to make space for gender non-conforming kids in high school traditions, Jax makes a bid for homecoming court in a race against their former best friend.

@saaaavv and I directed Royalty in January at @campyatc with a group of some of the most talented and open-hearted teenagers I’ve ever had the privilege of meeting. Our editor @brianlevin83 is a genius wizard who truly created this short, our DP @conmankringles is the only reason Royalty doesn’t look like it was filmed on a potato, our student directors were always prepared with a joke and a positive attitude, and our actors were professional, hysterical, and brave at every turn. It goes without saying that none of Royalty would be possible without @campyatc which provided the support, space, and creative push to shoot an 8 minute short in 5 days with shooting blocks of only 4 hours. Our producers @theshawnryan @johnainsworth2 @vdohrer trusted us implicitly, and have challenged and fostered the journeys that Sav and I have been on for years, both in the arts and in our own queerness. Consider a donation to YATC to support queer kids in the arts, and the adult filmmakers they become! Or split two donations between YATC and @binderdrive to provide free binders to black trans & non-binary folks in the US!

⚠️Hi friends, long caption warning⚠️ These last two weeks have been some of the most gratifying, exhausting, & inspiring of my entire life. I directed a short film with @saaaavv about a remarkable non-binary teenager named Jax who is hell-bent on breaking down the archaic traditions at their high school. Jax was, in turn, played by a remarkable non-binary teenager who we had the IMMENSE privilege of getting to know over the course of our five days of shooting and seven days at camp.
From the outset, Sav and I wanted to create an environment on set where everyone could feel comfortable as actors, and respected as young artists, and I feel pride beyond words for the work they did this week, for the roles that Sav and I stepped up to, and for the guidance and company of our DP Connor @conmankringles
I’ve been obsessing over the footage since the moment we wrapped.
I will have plenty of other photo dumps over the next few days, but here’s a few highlights on and off set, where I was lucky enough to spend time (though never enough!) with some of the most generous, open, funny, and kind people a guy could ever be lucky enough to know. I’m lucky to call them my friends, and luckier to know they’re my chosen family.
Friends still reading, let’s make something. 💖
