Three out of four challenges have now been completed in the 2025 World Rowing Virtual Series. The final challenge, which will determine where the medals end up, awaits in September, and I’m in the race!

Here is my story so far in the competition.

[ Challenge #1: Podium Power ]
Unfortunately, as I said earlier, I’m not much of a sprinter. I would have liked to see a time under 33 seconds, but it didn’t happen this time. I lost a lot of positions in this event, which will be difficult to make up.

Result: 33.1
5th in my age group, 52nd overall

[ Challenge #2: Yin-Yang ]
Very happy with this event. I remember that I only had one stroke left with quite a few seconds to go, so I gave it everything I had and then had to sit and wait for the metres to tick in. It was great feeling when it stopped at exactly 843m, meaning no penalty meters.

Result: 1686m
2nd in age group, 25th overall

[ Challenge #3: Metronome ]
Also satisfied with this event which I won in my age group. I chose to start at R18 after much deliberation and guidance from @buchancameron. 🙏🏻

Very annoying rounding error on my first attempt, did 5825m but got rate 37 despite 36.333 strokes in the last 3 minutes. I have also analysed the data file from the session and it shows 109 strokes in the last 3 minutes, but somehow it is rounded up to 37 in this case. This resulted in 30 penalty meters.

I made a second attempt but unfortunately did not manage to improve my result. However, this attempt had no penalty metres. On the other hand, I saw a new PB in terms of maximum heart rate, 188!

Result: 5795m
1st in my age group, 22nd overall

[ Challenge #4: Heartbeat ]
The fourth and final challenge looks like it will suit me quite well, 8 x 1’ on/1’ off. It will be a tough battle against Paul, James and Joseba for the medals. Fun!

HM @20 75% HRR http://roadtosub6.blogspot.com/2017/11/hm-20-75-hrr.html
First row after two days off - trying to get home ready for baby arrival in not so very long now..... With the crazy Bear Challenge on I decided to plum for a HM @20 75% HRR as that fitted with the current training - was watching "In the line of duty" and of course the big finale chase scene coincided with the end of the row hence HR racing a little lol

24 Million lifetime meters 60r18 70% 2by1min

So tonight I crossed the 24 million meters mark and all I got was this lousy certificate lol - I'm joking - I love my C2 certs :) but looking forward to 25 million and the "additional prizes" :o) so the row was a simple 60r18 70% HRR but I knew from sitting on the erg that the HR was reading a little high and true to form the overall meters dipped on recent rows of the same ilk (1:52.1 ave last time vs 1:53.0 today) could be one of a few factors, nothing major but good to have the HR figures there to keep it in check. Didn't really look forward to the 2by1min - it's late, dark, cold and damp - but go them done and now to rest and recover.

15,929m 1:53.0 Ave HR 142 Max HR 150 (got to stop thinking about 2k's during these rows) TE 2.6
