Een stad maak je samen. ❤️

Daarom trok ik gisteren samen met Veerle Baert en Alejandro door Gent. Om te luisteren en zelf te ervaren waar rolstoelgebruikers dagelijks tegenaan botsen. Soms letterlijk.

Ik nam zelf plaats in een gewone rolstoel. En dan merk je pas hoe een simpele boordsteen, een versperd voetpad of een ontoegankelijke bushalte plots een groot obstakel wordt. Of in hoe weinig horeca- en handelszaken je binnen geraakt met een rolstoel.

Niet alles is morgen opgelost. Maar door tijd te maken, te luisteren en vooral zelf te ervaren, krijgen we beter zicht op de problemen en kunnen we gericht zoeken naar oplossingen.

Bedankt Alejandro voor je initiatief en je openheid. Samen maken we Gent beter voor iedereen! ❤️

Today was an amazing day. I've never felt as empowered as a person living with a disability as I did just now, riding around Ghent with @veerle_baert , @mimich_lumiere and @jorisvandenbroucke.

Being heard by Joris, our alderman for mobility, and having him experience firsthand the challenges we face every day, will stay with me as one of my proudest achievements!

Thank you, Veerle and Michael, for sharing your stories and helping put a spotlight on our community. And thank you, Joris, for listening and for promising to take action. I look forward to working together to improve the lives of all Ghentians.

As Dr Margaret Chan, former WHO Director-General said "Almost every one of us will be permanently or temporarily disabled at some point in life." Disability access shouldn't be a personal fight, and it isn't one!

I can't wait for the videos of today to come out, so stay tuned!

This was such a great moment!

My good friend Alejandro has been working out so hard that I had to share this as a reel instead of just a story

40kg x 5 - big rep PR 🎉

Alejandro's been recovering from Guillaun Barre syndrome (a rare neurological condition that can cause rapid muscle weakness and paralysis) and we try to train together whenever I'm in Ghent 🤗.

The unfortunate part is that it's only every so often since I live so far. But the amazing part about that is that I can see his process so clearly since he's been working out harder than almost everyone I know 💯🥹

Thank you for including me in your journey, my sweet friend. I'm so fucking proud of you!!

En of de eerste Gentse seizoenssessie een succes was 🤩 (of zoals de Alexi in slide 3 zou zeggen - een supersucces) !!

Volgende sessies staan al vast en er zijn nog plekjes:

☀️ 25/7 - nog 1 plaatsje beschikbaar in de namiddag
☀️ 8/8 - volzet
🍁 7/11 - net open dus nog allemaal beschikbaar

Als het te snel volloopt, plan ik een extra sessie in september en janauri dus DM mij als je denkt van 'da zijn mijn maanden!!'

Powerlifting introduction class!

Yesterday was amazing. And thanks to @karen.mouws.foto we have some fantastic pictures to show for it ✨

In a powerlifting introduction class, I lay down the basics of powerlifting in just two hours.

We go over the general rules, explore what it means to create tension in the body — using my signature toy car explanation 👀🚗 — and look at the basic technique of each lift.

Everyone gets a turn at a back squat, bench press and deadlift, with the focus on how their own body moves, never on comparing to others.

At the end of the session there’s a little deadlift show-off, where everyone gets the chance to surprise themselves with how strong they actually are. Spoiler: it’s almost always much stronger than they think 💃

Most heard comment at the end of the day: "Wait! I can actually lift that?!" 🥳

Strength is not exclusive, it just needs to be made accessible 🏳️‍🌈. I feel extremely proud of everyone who showed up and gave it their all!

I want to thank Bart De Neve somehow for his support during my (ongoing) time at the @uzgent #k7 revalidation as he recently passed away, just months after his succesful recovery. 🥺

I had the honor of being his #revarave #DJ where we celebrated his homegoing. He had such a big heart, like all of my dear friends that I made in the center during my recovery, but shined through in the ability to endure, stay calm and positive, and he gave so much of that energy to all of us. We were buddies in destinies that we didn’t get to choose, and destined to make it back to society in a strong mental suit and mobile bodies.

My sincere respects to his family and friends who most definitely made him such a delightfully joyous man. 🙏

And of course thanks to my #reva buddies such as the amazing photographer of these pics @c3sapo , my trusty roomie @kendc__ , and Lieven, Shaun, Kendy, Jasper, Abdel, the staff & doctors … you guys are the best & make my difficult time as a recent amputee bearable & faster 🦵. See u on monday 🥲😬

Reva-rave! We did a party at the revalidation centre of @uzgent for our friend’s homegoing.
Of course that means we needed some proper music and I was happy to provide. Even in these hard times (aka, I recently lost my left leg..) and despite the pains, I keep making the best of it. If I focus all my energy on passionate things like music and life’s riches, the pain is my least concern and this allows me to keep going. So grateful to still be alive 🙏
