Next up, it’s a playlist for Thea, Amber, My brother, Chris, and Heather; composed of new music, jazz, film scores, ambient, international sounds. Some seriously fantastic tracks in here - I love them all but one that particularly stood out for me is the improvised duet between Kayhan Kalhor & Toumani Diabate from their album ‘The Sky Is the Same Colour Everywhere’. In a time of seemingly relentless bad news and loss of faith in humanity, listening to a cross-cultural improvisation that sounds so naturally interconnected is a reassurance of music’s power to connect us. Corny, maybe but true - I’ve returned to their album again and again this past year and it’s a perfect meditative salve for why it’s imperative we go on and connect with people. Even for a crankshaft like me, it’s true! But yeah, the rest of the playlist is chock full of beautiful performances and melodies and restorative vibes, man - obviously, I went down a 20th century French composer , VOCES8, and Gondwana Records rabbithole, but who doesn’t, am I right? 😬 https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4Fmr6qVLC5CVk6slRJn3LH?si=JsJmZd7LTFG7BqVo9Gv9Fw&pi=u-zzIqFkH6QOmA

New track! I spent the evening the day Ryuichi Sakamoto passed playing and improvising over his music. It's difficult to put into words to express the impact Sakamoto's work had on me as both a young person and now as an artist. He was the very model of the kind of artist I wanted to be - forever curious about the world of sound and its potential to move the spirit. I hope this two minute piano improvisation / extrapolation over his chords somehow capture how much I truly admired him as not only an artist but activist and human being - and more importantly, my thanks. The title of both this piece and my forthcoming ep, where it will appear in a slightly different form, comes from a post that the Thai filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul wrote upon Sakamoto's passing: "Even in this tremendous silence, your waves persist." RIP Ryuichi Sakamoto https://jienanyuan.bandcamp.com/track/your-wave-persists-for-ryuichi-sakamoto-piano-version

And we're back! and on Bandcamp Friday, too! Presenting 1473.33: CHRISSY MARTIN, 'SOUND SCORES' This is Chrissy's third release on 1473, and it's an absolute corker. Y'all know that there are few artists or creatives I know that I respect more than Chrissy. I've already written extensively about how she's awesome for her other two releases, so I'll spare you all the glowing adulation, but yeah, to keep it succinct, watching Chrissy push her and her collaborators to their creative limits in the most holistic and nurturing way has been a true joy. I cannot say much about her as a friend, artist, and creative collaborator; other than that, I swear the saying 'can't stop, won't stop' was invented just to describe her. And the sounds! The sounds! What a gift and surprise this was to listen to for the first time! It's always so cool when a buddy surprises me with new music that I had no idea they were working on. Obviously, 1473 has been on hiatus while I've been busy with returning to live performance and curating an art exhibit (details in my stories), but 10 seconds into 'Sound Scores' and I knew it was the perfect release to kick start momentum back up again. The way she mixes field recordings, voice, and discrete textures together is so immersive, so hypnotic—almost like if Burial went pastoral. In either case, it's so good, and I couldn't be more psyched to share these four pieces with you all. Oh, and again, it's Bandcamp Friday, so that means 100% of sales will go to Chrissy! Please support her! Finally, as always, thanks for listening! Link also in bio! https://chrissymartin.bandcamp.com/album/sound-scores-4

1473.32 is A Young Person’ Guide of “Actually, Records.” It recently occurred to me that a large chunk of people in my life don’t know that I used to run a physical record label called “Actually, Records.” from 2003-2009. Time moves on, yes, but those six years I was pretty much consumed by all things record label - recording, mixing, mastering, promo, booking shows, graphic design, etc. I’m not going to claim that I was particularly gifted at any of it but what I can say is that almost 20 years on, the music holds up all day. All day! I try not to look back too often (this is not an attribute - just a trait) so listening to the 14 “Actually, Records.” releases again after many years was odd at first but quickly transformed into a delightful experience. Sure, I blew a crap ton of money on the label and sure, pressing CDs right when they were at their most expensive to manufacture and declining in sales a quick pace was not the best financial decision and sure, my wife had the patience of a saint as I was practically consumed with all things “Actually, Records.” when most women would have bailed early on but hey, that’s how it goes sometimes hahaha But the music - the music! I couldn’t be prouder today to re-present these 14 tracks - my favorites from each physical release - I could ramble on and on and on about how much I adore them but I will just ask this of you, potential listener. Play this compilation all the way through and you’ll find a story there - of a city, of a time, of a vision, of creativity, and of the artists themselves. There’s indie rock, noise, pop, folk pop, indie pop, melancholy guitars, outlaw folk, epic guitars, synths, indie rock royalty Sooyoung Park and Damien Jurado, and the best flute solo ever laid on a record ever. So enjoy the dream that was "Actually, Records." and as always, thanks for listening!
