POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Looking back on all the photos of Atonement these past few weeks have brought me a sense of pride that I can’t even explain. I cannot thank @c80.pics enough for her incredible artist’s eye for images that captured every moment of Atonement’s creation. Everyone was taking photos and videos and this image in particular truly captures Atonement. Both the film and the experience of making it was chaos. Getting a crew, casting the characters, location scouting, the production design, losing cast and crew and gaining cast and crew, the 3 day night shoots, the editing and the physical and creative risks that everyone took, all captured in one image. There is a lesson that I learned from two of my favorite filmmakers. One was my old boss, @francisfordcoppola and the filmmaker who also taught Francis this lesson which is Elia Kazan. It is to have your film summed up in one word, and for Atonement, that word is Accountability. I wanted myself and the audience to explore the nature of accountability and what is the best way to hold ourselves accountable. I cannot thank the entire cast and crew enough for helping bring Atonement to life. To my cast @sonofcarwade @leviburdick @missbeanpants and @skultangrail for bringing the characters to life. Working with actors is my favorite part of directing and the collaboration was incredible. To my crew from @highlands.film.society @emharris03 @hahagazpacho @villah3n and @a_shockley.97 for being with me from beginning to end and the berry crew @themattparks @ezzy.cr @cartrr.goodson @gjzielke06 and @galadiems for saving Atonement at the last minute, @agoofyguy for his amazing 1st AD work, to @catie_sullivan for her bts photos, to @darlyn.mc for her outstanding editing, to @izzzzrael @gracieelizabethh99 @thesethingram @emil_chehab @junebugboogie11 and my family for their significant contributions and especially to @josephcastlemanmc and @damonself_ for sticking with me since before the beginning, their input, their creativity and their brotherhood. You all believed in Atonement as much as I did and I am eternally grateful. This is just the beginning. Photo by @hahagazpacho

Special Thanks Spotlight - Special Thanks to my Mom, Dad and Brother. Thank you to my mom, dad and brother for providing the location that would be where Atonement was filmed. The crew and I shot the film at my family’s cabin and the surrounding land around it. It because of people like my mom that I discovered my eternal love for Cinema, from the trips to the movie theater, to the VHS tapes at home. I was very fortunate in my journey across Cinema growing up. While I was exposed to bigger movies like Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings, I also had TCM to expose me the great filmmakers of old and eras like the Golden Age of Hollywood and eventually finding my way to the great filmmakers from all over the world and across time. And this cinematic journey has lead to Atonement and I cannot thank my family enough for helping me achieve this dream. Photos by @catie_sullivan @c80.pics Videos by @skultangrail

Cast and Crew Spotlight - Crew member: Catie Sullivan. @catie_sullivan served as the BTS Photographer for Atonement. The majority of all the bts photos were taken by her and she captured every moment with the eye of an artist. Catie’s photography, like every frame of a movie, tells a story. Her eye for capturing everything in the moment, from her choice of camera shots to the subject that she is capturing in the frame, Catie is an artist in every way. Looking though all the bts photos, not only takes me back to the amazing time of filming Atonement, of working with other amazing artists both old and new who are my brothers and sisters, of achieving a dream and doing the job that I want in the film industry and making my first short film, but like how nostalgia is supposed to work, they remind me of the past but also reminds me of how this experience affects me now. And no one could’ve captured these moments like Catie did. She has also been the BTS Photographer for other short films that I have been a part of and she delivers the best photos every time. Catie and I first met in the Spring of 2017 when we part of the @6milepost the school newspaper for @gahighlands along with @josephcastlemanmc my Producer, 1st AD and Production Designer and she has been one of my absolute best friends ever since, and she is the sister. All the memories we have together both on and off set are some of the best experiences of my life. I fully endorse Catie as an artist and if you ever need bts photos for your film, Catie is the person to call. I can’t wait to work with her again. Behind the scenes for Atonement. Day 3. Night shoot. The last day of shooting. People were switching positions, the last interiors were shot and new people came to the set, including the amazing Kendra Stout, playing the role of The Woman, arguably the most important role in the film. Then came more fire and brimstone. After the grave scene, we came better prepared for another sequence… the bonfire. We actually had decent equipment to light a fire this time and we created a bonfire worthy of cinema. Then, Kendra gave us her screams of terror that shook the next sequence to the core. In a Felliniesque 8 1/2 style sequence with the bonfire and a sequence of existential running, the night will test just how far Cam will go to reach atonement. After a few more exterior shots after that, we wrapped and it was the greatest experience of my life. The cast and crew brought everything they had to bring this vision to life, and I could not have asked for better people to step up and make this film a dream come true. There will be individuals posts highlighting each member of the cast and crew and what they brought to Atonement each week. Stay tuned!!! Behind the scenes for Atonement. Day 2. Night shoot. Fire and Brimstone. One word to describe this day… chaos. But amongst the chaos, came a liberating experience that I was truly worthy of classic guerrilla filmmaking. The entire night, we shot one of the pivotal scenes of the film, the grave scene. Before we began shooting, there was rain. For day 1 it was fine because the night was all interiors. But day 2 was the day we started shooting outside. We had dug the grave way before the shoot and everything was set. But I underestimated the weather and the grave ended being filled with water. Thinking on our feet, the crew had to dig out the water with the same shovels that dug the grave in the first place. And where I underestimated the weather was in terms to the scene’s special effect. And since this was a practical effect, this proved to be a problem. But everyone on set pulled through and with a lot of thinking out of the box, and even though the solution was absolutely stupid and very dangerous and I do not recommend this to anyone, we managed to get it done and it looks awesome! We shot this one sequence all night and finished into the morning. It was a stressful night, but with good stress. It’s moments like that show what I love about making movies. It reminds me that no matter you’re schedule, no matter how limited your resources are, no matter how many mistakes you made beforehand, you have to be willing to take risks in order to make your movie work. Whether it be in writing, shooting or post, without risk, Art cannot reach its full potential. And everyone member of the crew went above and beyond in bringing this important scene to life. And especially to @josephcastlemanmc , for wearing three hats as producer, 1st AD and production designer and for risking his life in the most stupid way possible for creating the grave’s practical effect while keeping everyone on set safe.
