Do you trust your training? Or are you only thinking about outcome?

Waiting for a call? Waiting for an offer?

Coach Carney invited these free agents to opt in to something hard, on purpose. The guys set their alarms and showed up for a 4:30am workout with energy drinks and smiles.

Every hard thing you choose makes you 1% better than the specialist chasing the same spot. Another brick to build your career. One more way that you’ll move up ready lists and prospect lists.

Did you choose hard today?

Proud of these men.

They’re patient through the uncertainty of free agency. They show up for early morning kicking sessions. They build stronger machines in the gym. They seek the feedback they need to perform with confidence when evaluators are watching.

This is grit.

@3pointkicking × @carneykicking — ACCELERATOR WEEKEND- Powered by @trackmanfb 🏈📈

20 free-agent specialists. One goal: be ready when the opportunity comes.

This weekend, 3Point Kicking and Carney Training Facility brought together 20 free agents for our Accelerator Weekend — an opportunity to evaluate exactly where each athlete stands and prepare them for upcoming NFL workouts, combines, and professional opportunities.

Using TrackMan Football, athletes were able to put objective numbers behind their performance, identify areas that can immediately improve, and experience the type of pressure and evaluation that comes when kicking in front of professional teams.

At this level, opportunities can come quickly. When the phone rings, there isn’t time to get ready — you have to already be ready.

The weekend was about more than just making kicks. It was about creating a professional environment where athletes could compete, get measurable feedback, make adjustments, and leave better prepared for their next opportunity.

A huge thank you to all 20 athletes who came out and competed, and to Carney Training Facility for continuing to help us create opportunities for specialists pursuing the next level.

Measure it. Improve it. Be ready when your number is called.

Low back pain in athletes usually isn’t a structural problem. It’s a capacity problem.

When you train frequently — especially with rotation and repeated hinging, like a kicker putting out volume — demand on the lumbar spine outpaces its tolerance. The tissue isn’t damaged. It’s under-prepared. Hence the pattern: stiff in the morning, fine once you’re warm, sore again after training. Nothing on imaging, and rest only buys about 48 hours.

The fix isn’t avoidance. It’s exposure — loading the positions that hurt in doses you can tolerate, and rebuilding the control and strength that protect the spine under real demand.

Three exercises I used with this athlete:

1. Loaded Pelvic Tilt, Staggered RDL Position
Hinged and loaded, tilting the pelvis forward and back on purpose. Pain in a position usually means the nervous system stopped trusting it. This gives the pelvis somewhere to move while the core, glutes, and hamstrings own the range. Neuromuscular control, not stretching.

2. Quadruped Multifidus Lift / Hip Hike
The multifidus stabilizes the lumbar spine segment by segment and is the first thing to go quiet after back pain. Hiking the hip loads it directly while feeding in rotation — the exact demand of a kick — and builds the abductors and adductors that control the pelvis on one leg.

3. Barbell RDL Overcoming Isometric
Max intent into an immovable bar, in a position he tolerates. High force, no range to fail in. That’s how you raise the ceiling on what the spine can handle instead of waiting for it to settle.

One principle: expose the spine to load, rotation, and control in tolerable doses — then keep adding. Avoidance shrinks capacity. Loading builds it.

Strength is medicine. The goal was never less pain. It was more capacity.

San Diego and North County athletes: if your back has been doing this for weeks and stretching hasn’t touched it, that’s a training problem, not a rest problem. I work 1-on-1 with athletes in Encinitas on exactly this.

Coach Zauner would like to thank all of the kickers who competed and showcased their talent at this past weekend’s Combine. There was a tremendous amount of talent in this year’s kicking class.

My Combine is specifically structured to evaluate every aspect of the position. We begin with short-, medium-, and long-range field goal evaluations. From there, we move into positional kickoffs focused on landing the ball inside the 10-yard line, and finish with big-ball kickoffs to measure overall power and consistency.

Good luck to all the specialists at your Pro Days and to those competing in the NFL Combine showcase.

Coach Zauner’s College Senior & Free Agent Combines are “A Specialist’s Path to PRO Football.”
