During my road trip to Knoxville last weekend, I was worried the whole time about Kara and whether she was going to be okay without me. 😂

When I walked into the house, I was hit with the most delicious smell! Kara had a pot roast, potatoes, and carrots all cooking in the crockpot. No need to worry anymore! 😂 Although, apparently, she was still too scared to sleep downstairs by herself. 🤣

On a completely different note, knowing that our Shrum side of the family tree migrated from the East Coast through North Carolina and Tennessee before eventually landing in Southwest Missouri, my brother Jon and I decided to do some family searching.

We found the grave of our great-great-great-great-uncle Pleasant Shrum, a Union soldier buried in Macon County, Tennessee, northeast of Nashville. Pretty cool to uncover a little more of our family history!

Next mission: Find some living relatives! 😂

Busy weekend! Left Thursday afternoon and just got back home this afternoon. Had to come back to make sure Kara is getting taken care of and to rest up for the next trip. 😂

Knox definitely missed me. He hasn’t left my side since I got home.

Cooper got his first hit on Friday night at Covenant Health Park. Home of the Chicago Cubs AA team the Knoxville Smokies

Saturday, Cooper informed me that he played against #94, Edrick Hill of Alabama, during his freshman year as a starting QB. Cooper was sacked a few times that game but as he said after the game that kid going to Alabama didn’t sack me 😂

Then he got to be on the field after the W, soaking up that college experience.🧡🏈

Cooper at today’s Tennessee-Alabama game. Jon and I not able to score tickets so figured the next best thing to watch it in Rocky Top 🧡🏈

Quick trip to the Music City to see Cooper in his uniform for the first time. Had some time at first base and an at bat. Got that first strike out of his career taking care of.
😂
Next trip to Knoxville next Friday. I’m sure the colors in the Smoky Mountains will be yucky. Will have some reports from the road coming soon! 🍁 🍂 🐻

Today started off on the deck, coffee in hand. Sent Kara a picture of me enjoying the morning. Not to rub it in, but to remind her that in 7 1/2 months, she’ll be joining me. 😊

Shared a story on my facebook and instagram this morning and it really hit me.

If you haven’t watched Reacher, I highly recommend it. Without giving anything away, judging by his appearance, he had just been through the ringer. All stitched up and exhausted. That scene was a mirror of the opening scene. Now all beaten up from helping with one task, he was already moving on to the next. He doesn’t seek fanfare or notoriety. He just does what needs to be done to help people he doesn’t even know.

For some reason, that hit me pretty hard.

It brought back a memory of a trip my dad and I made to Hannibal one day. We stopped by his old elementary school. Dad used to tell the story about how, when he was little, he decided he did not want to be at school anymore and would run out of building and head home. Grandma Margery would have to bring him back. 😂

Eventually, she told him that if he did it again, she’d tan his backside with a willow branch! 😂 Scared him so badly that he never missed another day of school from that point until he retired in 1998.

But here’s the part I’ll never forget.

That day in Hannibal, Dad had stopped at his old elementary school to take care of the lunch accounts of any students who owed money. I asked him how often he would do something like that.

His answer was simple.

“Whenever they need me to.”

I miss him.

Those five words say a lot about the man he was. He didn’t need recognition, a pat on the back, or anybody to know what he was doing. If somebody needed help and he could do something about it, he did.

I know he’d be proud of his sons, granddaughters, grandsons, and daughters-in-law. They’re all good people who would give the clothes off their backs to help somebody else.

Maybe that’s the real legacy he left us. Not what we accomplish for ourselves, but what we’re willing to do for others when they need us.

Think I need to reach out to that school. ❤️

Nothing major to report today. Did hoof it a total of 5 miles between Knox walks and mowing the grass.

Mentioned to Kara, “Think I would like to buy a telescope.” Her response, “Are you my little space nerd?” I guess stuff related to anything outside of our Exosphere Kara considers “nerdy stuff”. Has nothing to do with dudes with pointy ears or little green wizard boys waving around their light sticks…I just want to see the rings of Saturn…Just thought that would be neat. I’ll show her. I’m gonna get a telescope and she’s not going to be able to use it!

Oh good the dodgers won again today. Great job with a payroll of a trillion 😒
What’s more impressive is the Vikings are 4-0 without scoring a touchdown yet. So take that stupid dodgers

Exciting weekend watching our favorite daughter playing some softball! Followed up her game with a stop by Boulevard Brewing for a refreshing adult beverage before heading to Ponak’s for a burrito the size of my head. I showed that delicious, pork-filled El Hefe who was boss! 😂

Biggest accomplishment of the weekend, however, was my successful trip to Walmart.

You’re probably thinking, “George, how hard could that be?”

Well, as I headed out the door, I asked Kara if she needed anything, to which she replied, “Nope, I’m good!”

Away I went!

As I was getting the things on the list, I get a text from Kara: “Could you pick this up for me please?”

Well, I looked at the photo and I couldn’t even pronounce the product. It did say what aisle it would be in, but there was one little problem…that information was for a different store! 😂

She knew I was going to the State Line store and gave me aisle information for the Raymore store.

I said to myself, “George, this is a test!”

I looked and looked and looked. No Kitsch Air Dry Cream with Castor Oil anywhere to be found. 😩

But I locked in.

I thought, “There is a Target right across the street. I’m definitely coming home with this product!”

So I went to Target, walked right up to this Kitsch, and SUCCESS!! 😂😂😂

When I arrived home, I proudly informed Kara that I had found her hair care treatment.

Her response?

“Oh, you found it?!?”

Girl… I WIN THIS ROUND. 😂

Cannot wait for my next challenge. 😊

Well apparently Knox was onto something last night when he was barking at Kara in the kitchen. If you recall from last nights post Kara was making her chocolate chip cookies. Discussion last night was these cookies just don’t taste right. What Kara didn’t realize until this morning was she forgot to put sugar into them…..😂😂😂😂. Knox has become such a reliable Sous chef for me that he was telling Kara “hey lady you forgot the sugar!!” Here is the post from last night and an additional video of Knox in action today!
Enjoy!

Not the result we were hoping for, but I think Cooper had a great time! Still has some big games to look forward to with Alabama and LSU coming to town. Little more experience that young QB is going to be good! 🧡🤍🏈

Happy Dolly Parton Day everyone!! So to balance out the family tree from yesterday’s post, today is the death anniversary of my 8th-great-grandfather, Dr. Joseph Fiske. He served as a surgeon during the Revolutionary War and even performed surgery right on his dining room table. 8th-Great-Grandpa Joe was born on Christmas Day in 1752 and passed away 189 years ago today. More on his story at a later date.

One of the benefits Cooper gets for all those years of hard work is that certain opportunities come his way. Not many kids will be able to say they attended a football game where Johnny Knoxville, Morgan Wallen, Peyton Manning, and a president were all in attendance. Sounds like the beginning of a good joke! 😂

It’s been a really busy week around here. Forgot to get the trash out, didn’t get the clothes folded and put away, but I did manage to cook Kara some pretty sweet vittles. Tenderloin, chicken Alfredo, and chicken noodle soup. Kara decided she wanted cookies, too. Knox was a little confused at first, but he decided it would be okay. 😂

Anyhoo, BIG day tomorrow! Anna has a doubleheader as she begins her senior year of softball. Of course, we’ll be waiting for pictures from Cooper as he gets the opportunity to have one of the coolest college football experiences ever! FOMO big time, but super excited for him!

Tonight a history lesson.
With Tennessee playing Texas this weekend, I figured it was a good time to share a little family history. 🍊🤘

Besides Cooper being a Volunteer I’ve got a pretty good reason to be pulling for the Vols… and maybe a little reason to give Texas a hard time. 😂

One of my ancestors, Jacob Calloway Darst, was one of the Immortal 32 — the group of men from Gonzales TX who answered William B. Travis’ call for help at the Alamo.

Jacob had been living in Texas, but before that he was from Missouri and had quite a history as a frontiersman and soldier. On March 1, 1836, he rode with the Gonzales volunteers into the Alamo. They were the only reinforcements to successfully make it inside after Travis called for help.

For the next five days, Jacob stood with men like Tennessee Volunteer Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie and William B. Travis, fighting for Texas independence.

On March 6, 1836, the Mexican army launched its final assault on the Alamo. Jacob was killed in the battle.

He was 42 years old.

So as Tennessee and Texas get ready to play this weekend, I guess I can honestly say:

Tennessee helped Texas fight for its independence… and one of my ancestors was there.

That makes this game a little more interesting for me. 😂

But Jacob…

You picked the wrong side of this weekend’s family argument. 😂🍊
