Adventure of the Week: Rudimentary & Casual

With three days to spare, we packed up and headed out. The only objective was to drive far enough north to see snow, which landed us in North Carolina in late December 2022. We set up the big tent and installed a wood stove inside. We slept on cots, cooked at camp, and went hiking.

There wasn’t anything particularly special about the journey—but that’s the point. Not every adventure requires intense misfortune to inspire growth. Not every adventure needs excitement to be worth remembering.

Adventure of the Week: In the fall of 2024, we set out on a two-day hiking trip to the Walls of Jericho. It was a sizable crew, complete with dogs and plenty of gear. The hike was all downhill one day and all uphill the next.

The reputation of the Walls stands tall—part canyon, part astounding natural creation. We camped above the falls, which required hoisting our gear and the dogs over the cliff using ropes and harnesses. By the time we made camp, it was dark. The food was basic but delicious. We boiled water from a nearby puddle, and the cold air settled in around us.

That night, a full moon lit the area so brightly it felt like daylight once our eyes adjusted. In the morning, we woke up, made coffee, and began the few-hour hike back to the parking lot. Rappelling the gear and dogs down the cliff took two hours, but we made it happen. On the way home, we stopped at Huddle House and called it an adventure well done.
