In the Rocinha favela we were able to watch kids of the Acorda Capoeira group perform! The Acorda group is a home grown operation that teaches kids capoeira (a Brazilian dance form that combines martial arts and dance) as well as English. The goal is to get this kids out of the slum and teach others around the world this tradition. Unbelievable!

The most meaningful part of trip to Brazil was visiting Rocinha Favela. There are Favelas, or slums, all over Brazil and generally not safe for tourists because of drugs and violence and gang wars. Carlos brought us to Rocinha, the largest slum in Rio, to show us the human side. There is no infrastructure in a slum, houses are built on top of houses up the mountain side. There is only one road so people have to walk or ride bikes to get home. There are also shops and stores, a city within a city. Electrical wires are everywhere, once one breaks another is slapped up so it looks like a tangled mess. Garbage everywhere. The people were very kind and welcomed us into their home. Carlos said that people have pride for the favela the come from. This favela was where Michael Jackson made his video for “they don’t care about us. If you haven’t seen the movie “City of God” watch it! It shows life for people in the Favelas..

Another day, another mountain! Sugarloaf mountain, 1299 feet of gorgeous rock, cable car up to the top with views of Rio! Thanks again to Carlos for helping us non-Portuguese speaking gringos make it to this spectacular sight

Pictures don’t do it justice, unreal to stand at the top of a mountain with the statue of Jesus. 125 foot tall and another 26 feet of its base. Underneath the base is a chapel. Major props to Carlos who knows this wonder inside and out. With his guide skills we skipped a 4 hour wait in the hot sun to take the train to the top! Sampled amazing tapioca gelato (tapioca is everywhere) and then did a coffee tasting at Rio coffee☕️. Coffee realization. Americans drink coffee so fast and so much, for example by 10am on any given day I have had at least 3 cups. In Brazil everything is dainty and small and to be savored. Goals for return to USA, drink coffee like a Brazilian
