On Saturday I had the pleasure of attending Sanctuary After Dark: Legacies of Queer Nightlife: a manifesto on community, partying, and resistance presented by @creativetime and @_bodyhack_ for @10magazineusa I had the pleasure of hearing stories from Lola Flash @flashnine9 and Alice O’Malley @omalleystudios on what it was like in the 90s to party and work at Clit Club while photographing, documenting, and educating people in the midst of the AIDS crisis when the government failed to respond. Today, decades later, the LGBTQ+ community is once again under attack from the government, and trans rights are being stripped away state by state. And that day, on the Nowadays dancefloor that same alchemy, transmuting grief into gathering played out again. Read it @10magazineusa or my link in bio 🙂‍↕️ Photograph credit: Lola Flash

UPDATE: now also featuring a q+a with Beck Haberstroh and Imani Thompson discussing their project "We Are Already Gathered" "We are already gathered is an event series that brings together communities with shared surveillance risks. Let's talk about who is collecting our information and strategize through teach-ins and zine-making.Together, we investigate the systems that investigate us." beck haberstroh is an interdisciplinary artist and writer. Their practice wrestles with ways that personal data is exploited by corporations and governments. They use elements of sculpture and performance to collaboratively make new photographic systems together, to create ways of seeing and being seen that give us agency, care and power. They are a resident with Mozilla Foundation's Creative Futures x Rhizome: Counterstructural Commons. More on the project here: https://wearealreadygathered.info Join Cypurr as we take on the surveillance-scape through film! This month, we’ll be taking in small bites of cinema with discussions on the ever-growing threat of government use of surveillance tech and AI, as well as finding our autonomy in automated systems of authority. This afternoon’s menu of flicks includes: - Black Mirror: Fifteen Million Merits- Set in an enclosed world where most of society must cycle on exercise bikes in order to generate electricity and then earn currency called “merits”, the episode tells the story of Bing (Daniel Kaluuya), who meets Abi (Jessica Brown Findlay) and convinces her to participate in a talent show so she can become famous. - Benn Jordan: Breaking the Creepy AI in Police Cameras- If you live in the United States, it’s very likely that a private startup has been logging and sharing your vehicle’s location without your consent. In this video we explore how AI can defend against being tracked by 3rd party police and retail AI tracking cameras. - Please Hold: A young man’s life is suddenly and inexplicably derailed, as he finds himself at the mercy of automated “justice.” Come by for some film and talk with the Cypurr folk! Check link in bio for rsvp! Text Description: Cypurr Cinema Super Secret Matinee Presents Surveillance Shorts!
