#copiapoaserpentisulcata ….I was on cloud 9 coming upon our first specimen of this species in the hills just inside Pan de Azúcar National Park….so much so that we illegally parked the car halfway on the road, unknowingly trespassed, and sprinted up into the hills with no water or reason. Like bloodhounds we sniffed our way higher and higher past beautiful clumps of C. Cinerascens with the inkling that there might be Serpentisulcata higher up in these moon-like valleys of the coastal mountains. Nearing the top, looking back, the car was a small speck on the road barely visible through a small V-notch window in a little alcove I was following upward. Soon, I began to see small Serpenti…some of the most fewarding and anticipated plants of the trip for me. Entranced already, I looked up to see a massive, caterpillar-like Serpentisulcata crest staring me down. I paused, and all the adrenaline of rushing up the hills subsided, and I experienced an overwhelming rush of gratitude for the plants and for the journey. Eventually @pretty_fly_4_a_kacti caught up to me, and we admired what was probably the rarest plant of our trip, together. Shattering the silence, @cactus.adam shouted at us, “the car!” , we looked down at the ant-like vehicle to see a ranger parked behind our vehicle with his lights flashing, inspecting our car. “Oh shit”….

I’ve been visiting the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens for years, and I can honestly say yesterday, walking the Desert section with @cactusquest & @cactus.adam was the absolute best it has ever looked.

The blooms on the columns were putting on a show, and the bird activity was the perfect bonus.

The desert garden is thriving right now, probably because of Ivan Garibaldo's love and dedication to these plants. Always a good day when the glass gets to capture both of my favorite worlds in one place! 🌵🌸🐦

Dudleya nubigena ssp. cerralvensis is perhaps the least-known and rarest Dudleya taxa in the world. Endemic to Cerralvo Island off the coast of the Cape region of Baja California Sur, this species is only found on shaded, north-facing granitic cliffs on the island. Originally described by the great botanist and eminent Dudleya expert Reid Moran, he only found this species in one canyon near the abandoned ranch on the island. Over the following decades a few more populations have been found, including this one by Kelly Griffin.

This subspecies mostly differs from the mainland subspecies of nubigena in its striking bright yellow flowers. The mainland nubigena have two inflorescence forms, one with more complex inflorescences with glaucous, downwards to horizontal-facing flowers adapted for hummingbird pollination and one with erect flowers and a simpler structure. Subspecies cerralvensis seems intermediate with its flowers mostly being perpendicular to the inflorescence stalk at anthesis.

This subspecies is incredibly rare, as in addition to its few small populations, it is threatened by feral goats, who have eaten most of the plants that they can reach. Based on previous accounts of this population, its small numbers are dwindling from the constant grazing. These photos are from 2024. Hopefully the plants haven't declined further. The north-facing cliffs on this island host incredibly unique habitats and are also one of the southernmost localities for the charismatic elephant tree Pachycormus discolor.

Thank you to @cactus.adam for letting me share his photos. Adam and Dean @gnosis_nursery were the only ones in our group able to really monkey their way up to the flowering plants. Thanks to Kevin @kevincelniker and Josh @fairviewplants for tagging along as well, and Palapas Ventana for the panga ride to and from the island.

Searching the rocky canyons for native flora and fauna is always a thrill, and this trip absolutely delivered on both fronts!

The Succulent Survivor: Finding native Dudleya cymosa ssp. cymosa (commonly known as the Canyon Live-forever) clinging to the steep granite walls is incredible. They are perfectly adapted to thrive in these harsh, rocky crevices where almost nothing else can take root, pushing out their beautiful, vibrant blooms against the bare stone.

The Cryptic Amphibian: It took a second look to even realize we were being watched! The California Treefrog (Pseudacris cadaverina) is a true master of disguise in these habitats. Its rough, mottled, gray-and-brown skin flawlessly mimics the texture of the canyon boulders right along the stream edge. If they don't move, they are practically invisible.

Great Company: Huge thanks to @cactusquest and @cactusadam for the camaraderie out on the trails. There is nothing better than spending time in the field exploring and tracking down unique local species with dudes who share the exact same passion for it! 🌵
