This Foothills Yellow-legged Frog (Rana boylii) was one of my favorite finds while in California. This specialized frog inhabits rocky forested streams throughout a handful of regions in the state. This site was special, however, consisting of a vastly different ecosystem than they’re typically known for. Dry grasses, vinegar weed (Trichostema lanceolatum), alkali heliotrope (Heliotropium curassavicum), and invasive tamarisk surround the sand-gravel stream this population can be found. My brothers joining for this extensive, memorable hike and search for this frog made it all the better. Like many amphibians, much of their habitat has been lost or degraded, and they continue to disappear from parts of their historic range.

A beautiful young Northern Pacific Rattlesnake (Crotalus oreganus oreganus) which represents a lifer species for me and my brothers’ first ever cruised snake (and rattlesnake). California, 2025. It was a long but memorable day hiking in San Benito County guided by good pal @ahomeforbrunus .
