POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
It’s time for Part Two of my series highlighting BIPOC and Latine illustrators in publishing!

Reiterating my point from the first post, let’s stop referring to illustrated covers as “cartoon covers” or “cutesy.” No, those words are not inherently insulting, but they’re almost always used in a derogatory context. Illustrated covers can absolutely be cute, sometimes downright adorable. But “cutesy” rubs me wrong. Illustration is quite literally, a fine art. And illustrators are artists. I have a degree in graphic design, but it’s quite different from illustration. I had to take a semester of illustration and believe me, not just anyone with procreate can do it.

Cover preferences exist and illustrated covers don’t have to be your favorite. But it’s time we stopped treating illustrated covers as a silly little trend. Especially when we have AI slop book covers everywhere. Let’s show some support to the human artists actually putting in the work.

I really wanted to highlight more illustrators doing indie romance covers this time. I still many more posts like this planned, so stay tuned…

*Note, some illustrators design the full & final book cover, while others design the background illustration artwork only. Then a graphic designer adds in the design elements like typography or hand lettering.

[ID: a graphic with a pale peach colored background. With Darker peach/orange line drawings of artist hands holding pencils and scribble marks around the perimeter. In the center is an illustration of a purple book with white text over the top, that reads “behind the covers, highlighting BIPOC + Latine illustrators in publishing, part two.” The artists & their info included on each slide are embedded in alt text.]

The graphic novel version of JULIET TAKES A BREATH is so damn cool. It was such a joy to create with BOOM! Studios and Celia Moscote, our incredible illustrator.

I got the coolest news ever too. The graphic novel has earned out her advance. So every copy purchased, supports me directly via royalties.

Yes This version made me fall in love with Juliet all over again. If you haven’t checked it out, please run to your local comic bookshop or bookstore and get your copy. Request it from your library do whatever you gotta do to get this book in your hands.

Image 1 - a comic book page displays a chubby adorable little Puerto Rican round-the-way 19yr old wearing glasses riding the subway. The colors are peachy purple, and her name is Juliette Milagros Palante.

Image 2 - Juliet slams her hand on the dining room table & declares she is a lesbian 😁

Image 3 - Kira, a Korean American teen girl with long black hair & pretty eyes, introduces herself to Juliet.

Image 4 - a Puerto Rican flag hangs proudly above Juliet, nerdy beautiful Latina looking up at Boricua freedom fighter, Lolita Lebrón. Lolita’s fist is raised as she speaks with passion.

Image 5 - the graphic novel cover of JTAB. It’s purple, yellow orange and shows Juliet in a purple jacket looking knowingly over her shoulder. The title is displayed on the back of her jacket.

Image 6 - boomerang of a student created piece of artwork based on Juliet. It is on purple paper and Juliet’s face looks at us in quiet awe.

To earning out advances and being able to live this writer life & live it well. Thank you everyone for your love & support

I am buzzing with love & joy!

The students at Cal State Dominguez Hills made art work inspired by my book JULIET TAKES A BREATH.

Their artistry & fun filled energies just totally uplifted me. I am in awe of their connection to the book and the dedication with which they crafted their projects.

So many classes read JULIET & AMERICA. Like be still my queer beating heart, this is what it’s all about.

Thank you a million times over!
