POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Last Saturday, during the NATA Formation Clinic, there was this P-51C Red Tail on the ramp. I had seen this plane once before in an airshow in New Orleans. It was really cool to be able to stand so close to a piece of living history.
The Tuskegee Airman, known as the Red Tails for their signature red colored tails, were the first African American fighter squadron in WW2 that were trained in Tuskegee Alabama. They got to be well known for escorting the all white bomber crews and their planes, and for being relentless during their fighting in the skies over the European Theater. The bomber boys come to know them by their tail color, and would actually request them for protection in the air, and that’s what the meaning behind the wording “By Request” on this plane means. “By Request” is what Colonel Benjamin Davis Jr named his P51, and this fighter has those words painted on it as a tribute to him and all the Tuskegee Airmen.

One show, five warbirds! Two P-51s, a TBM Avenger, an F4F, and a Corsair all put on amazing performances in Grand Junction! If you were there, which one did you enjoy seeing fly most?

Walking up to a KC-135 Stratotanker will change your perspective fast. Students from the Tuskegee Airmen Aerospace Camp got an up-close look at the aircraft during a 507th Air Refueling Wing tour at Tinker Air Force Base. Programs like this connect youth directly with aviation careers, keeping a historic legacy alive.
