Have you ever thrown a frog fly at night?
~
When the sun goes down, trophy trout leave their hiding spots looking for an easy meal. While most anglers reach for a mouse, frog patterns are one of the most overlooked, and effective, flies you can fish after dark. If you’re chasing big browns this summer, it might be time to think beyond the mouse…

Highback Chubs (Hybopsis hypsinotus) have got to be one of my absolute favorite leuciscids ever. Just another reason why the Yadkin River basin is so sick. These breeding males were well worth 3 hours of driving.

Sweet underwater footage is coming very soon...

Two different color morphs of the Big Levels Salamander (Plethodon sherando).

This Virginia endemic salamander is only found on a few ridges in central VA.

This species is pretty similar to the much more common Plethodon cinereus, but tend to have more (sometimes much more) frosting on the sides and more interrupted by dark blotching (or completely covered by frosting) dorsal patterning. The “non striped” morphs also have a different look and often have some level of dorsal pigment.

We had a few of these guys during our fall break run, and photographed these individuals. It was raining quite a bit, big shout to Ziva for standing over me with an umbrella for like 5 minutes haha.

Here’s a Three-lined Salamander, Eurycea guttolineata, from herp club last week! I love it when salamanders open their lil mouths. This guy was definitely gasping at Psalter after she was sucked into the mud… more than once…

Yay for warmer weather!!!

White-spotted Slimy Salamander (Plethodon cylindraceus) with a Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) in the background.

This is a continuation of my manders with wildflowers kick I’ve been on. I really like showing off stuff that the salamanders are encountering while salamandering about in habitat. Spring ephemeral wildflowers are really pretty on top of that, so it’s perfect!

I really like doing these types of photos. Artsy habitat shots? Yes please!

Blue Ridge Dusky Salamander (Desmognathus orestes) in front of Cut-leaved Toothwort (Cardamine concatenata) from a few days ago.

I really like spring, and for me, the best way to represent it photographically is to put a salamander next to a spring ephemeral wildflower.

I thought this yellowish orestes looked quite nice next to the light purple Toothwort flowers!

Hopefully more photos like this to come! I wanna do a whole series of these.

A cool looking Imitator Salamander (Desmognathus imitator) from the Smokies last summer.

These salamanders are pretty common at the right localities, but individuals with yellow cheeks are pretty uncommon (they typically have dark orange/red cheeks or no bright cheek coloration at all, depending on the population). I’ve seen a few before but always lost them, glad I finally got some photos of a nice one. He also had some neat pale patches going on which was double neat.

This is one of my favorite Desmogs. I do say that about half of the genus though….

My pockets did not have enough grip to keep my phone from falling into the puddle I was crouched in for this photo
Cool little Broken-striped Newt (Notophthalmus viridescens ssp. dorsalis) found with Max, Graem, Aly, and Chuck. I don’t remember who got the grab on this buddy, but I do know who ate too many biscuits at Biscuitville (@mud_salamander your sodium levels got to be dangerously high)!
Our little salamander friend was released safely into the water, as was my phone.

Figured I’d double up since I missed throwing a post up last weekend! Here’s a stunner Cow Knob Salamander (Plethodon punctatus) from my fall break trip.

We had a few of these all in the same little habitat patch and really got to see the phenotypic variation the species has to offer.

I can sorta see where the whole “very similar to cylindraceus” thing comes from with this guy, but honestly they’re pretty different looking in most other metrics aside from having somewhat similarly sized white spots.

I love all the wehrlei species, and this is no exception! Glad we got to see a few of them!

This is possibly the single coolest fish I have ever seen in my entire life. @cahillcritters and I were on a section of the Watauga with the dipnets yesterday. We had a decent day for the weather (windy and 40 degrees). The water was a balmy 33 degrees Fahrenheit, and we had to watch our shins for sheets of ice that floated by every few minutes. Dusk began to creep up on us around 5 o'clock, and we decided to call it a day, but while walking back, I decided to flip one more rock. I had actually flipped that rock already, but it was just too good not to. And low and behold, a giant Greenfin Darter (Nothonotus chlorobranchius) ended up in my net. After many excited expletives, we were able to get some awesome shots of this rad animal, including some underwater footage that I will post shortly.

Slopping down some pig shit with these fat fucks and I’m the fattest of them all. If I died tomorrow no one would shed a tear. Load my freakin’ lard carcass into the mud. No coffin please, just wet, wet mud. #Bae.
