Hey everyone, I’m Sally! I am honored to be walking on Gravel Day in honor of my sweet girl, Cailin. Cailin and I grew up together and were best friends for as long as I can remember. Cailin was a part of my family and a big part of who I am today. We always viewed our relationship as closer than friends. We were sisters. I admire so much about who she was and how she encountered and produced joy in her life. Her story is so much more than what she experienced at the end of her short life, and my dream is that her memory is marked by her life, not her death.

That being said, I did have the immense privilege of visiting Cailin in the ICU when the visiting policy was reduced to four people. It was an honor to sit with her, pray with her, braid her hair, paint her nails, and bring a bit of normalcy to an unfamiliar space. Her nurses and doctors were incredible, attending to her, doing what they could with what they knew. Unfortunately with Cailin’s sickness there was a lot of uncertainty. Witnessing and experiencing this unpredictability was diificult to process and even harder to accept.

Walking in Cailin’s honor and raising money to support cancer research is how we are choosing to reorient this tragedy. I wish more than anything that Cailin’s sickness would have been black and white. That her condition was clear and the solution was clearer. I look to a future where more is known about cases such as Cailin’s and where everyone has the best chance at life. Until then I pray her life, love, and memory lives on through me forever.

My sweet Cailin,

There truly are no words to describe the impact you have left on my life. Today feels so heavy but also so beautiful because today the world got to be brighter because of you. You were truly one of a kind. The kind of light that altered everyone’s lives you came in contact with. To know you was to be changed by you forever.

Losing you altered my life forever, but loving you also led me somewhere unexpected. Which was to faith. Through you, I found God in ways I never had before. Through your kindness, your joy, your love, and the way you carried light so effortlessly.

I miss you in the quiet moments, the exciting moments, and everything in between. I miss your laugh, your presence, and the way you made people feel seen. That was something so special about you. Today, I choose to celebrate you, your life, your heart, and the impact you continue to have on me, even from heaven.

I know you’re dancing up there so full out, wrapped in God’s love, shining brighter than ever. Thank you for changing me for the better.

Until we meet again 💕
Happy heavenly birthday sweet girl 🪽🤍

Today, we said our final earthly goodbye to Cailin Joyce. My hot dog eating, line dancing, .5 taking, friend. Our time together was too short. I told your parents at your calling hours that I absolutely admired your commitment to every bit you took part in. I refuse to believe you could figure out how to do anything even 90% of the way. It was all out, always, which is something I absolutely admire about you. The words said at your funeral echoed this idea. You had that church absolutely overflowing. Overflowing with people, grief, hope, and joy. You have brought countless people to the faith who will continue your legacy. You will live on in our hearts struggling to find joy in times like these. Your fight has only just begun. Together, with you as our guardian angel, we will continue to make heaven crowded. Until we meet again in the presence of our Heavenly Father, I love you Cailin🤍
