As I begin this new chapter with Rickson Gracie United, it is important to me to recognize and thank those individuals who helped make it possible.

There were many years when my path took me away from my team and their students. During this time, a small group of people continued to proudly represent my name, my philosophy, and the spirit of my Jiu-Jitsu. Even when I encouraged them to build under their own banners, they continued to carry what I had shared with them forward, with loyalty, integrity, and a deep belief in the art.

I have never forgotten this, and I will always be grateful.

For this reason, I have created the First Circle of Rickson Gracie United: an honorary designation recognizing those whose contribution to this mission has been significant, longstanding, and ongoing.

The First Circle is not a recognition of rank or seniority. It is my way of honoring those who stood beside me through the years, who helped preserve and transmit my vision of Jiu-Jitsu, and who continue to share my commitment to its future.

Pictured here are the founding members of the Rickson Gracie United First Circle: Pedro Sauer, Caique Elias, Luis Heredia, Dave Kama, and Harold Harder.

To each of you, I offer my deepest gratitude for your loyalty, your friendship, and the many years you have dedicated to carrying this art forward. It is an honor to have you standing beside me as we begin this next chapter.

Together, we will keep the art alive.

My father has been one of the biggest inspirations and supporters in my life. He believed in me before I believed in myself.

When I got out of the military, I wanted to open a Jiu-Jitsu academy. My dad started training just to understand what I was getting into. That was over 20 years ago.

He started in his early 50s and never stopped. He became one of my first Black Belts, alongside my good friend @nmaez

Today, at 76 years young, he’s still training and teaching every week.

If I’m not mistaken, we were the first father son Black Belt team in Colorado to own and run a Jiu-Jitsu academy. That was over 16 years ago.

I’m incredibly proud of my father and honored that I got to promote him to Black Belt. He’s a true martial artist, an example of kindness, and someone we can all aspire to be like.

At the academy, everyone calls him Pops❤️🥋

Keep showing up and making memories with your homies 🤙🤙

We are excited to announce a Jiu-Jitsu seminar with Professor Thomaz Elias, November 7th at noon. Contact Harlee at (907) 521-9632 for details.

A few words from Professor Thomaz...

My name is Thomaz. I’m a 3rd-degree black belt under my father, Caique, and at 36 years old, I’ve been training Jiu-Jitsu basically since I was born.

I’ve been fortunate to learn from many legends of the sport, including Royler, Rickson, Saulo, Xande, and others, and now I get to share that knowledge with my students.

I believe simple, well-rounded, perfectly executed Jiu-Jitsu is the purest form of the art. I thoroughly enjoy diving deep into techniques to understand exactly what makes them effective, why they work, and how each movement can be improved.

Super proud of this kid. She has grown leaps and bounds since Day 1. Jiujitsu was pretty scary for her the first day so I made it a personal goal to make sure it was a good experience to keep her returning. Fast forward a few years and she has grown heaps of confidence even though jiujtsu can make you doubt yourself sometimes. She is one of our fiercest competitors which was never the goal, it's just a by product of being consistent, always being willing to test yourself and never giving up even when it would be easier than dealing with the struggle. I dont know where she is going in life but I have no doubt she will achieve whatever she puts her mind to. We traveled all the way to Vegas for JiuJitsuCon to put her skills to test and prove that hard work pays off if you show up to put in the work.

Day 1 of IBJJF JiuJitsuCon Kids Internationals NoGi is in the books. Tomorrow we go hit the mats again again for Day 2 Gi.

After 30 years on the mats and roughly 40,000 hours of training, teaching, coaching, competing, and learning, I’ve come to one conclusion…

Let’s put this myth to rest.

A black belt isn’t 2–3 moves ahead of you.

What we are is better at recognizing patterns. Tens of thousands of hours teach you to anticipate the most common reactions to the problems you’re creating or the ones you’re solving.

It’s not magic and it’s not mind reading.

It’s pattern recognition, timing, and high percentage decision making built through repetition.

The game doesn’t get easier. You just get better at recognizing the patterns.

That’s when the game starts to slow down 👊🥋

DM “Let’s Roll” to learn more about my philosophy and mindset that has kept me rolling at 50.

Start engaging right away, if you don't have a plan for your first step make one, doesn't even have to be a good one. If you need to stall that's ok but rest between rounds instead. If you're so scared you don't want to engage, sit out, but really it's not that bad just go for it.

What if in 10 years of training you could get 65 extra hours of actual sparring? Not just mat time, active sparring.

How much better would that version of you be?

It's simple, stop wasting time, create a plan for your first move and get going asap. Worst thing that can happen is you get tapped and you've been tapped before so it's not that bad.
