Life's Queer has wrapped on filming (save for some lil goodies).

I described how it felt early in the process to Jeff, one of the greatest people I have ever known and someone I love enough to walk into a fire for, as a fever dream. From the initial read-throughs where the cast, most of whom I'd never met, began trying on these characters like kids playing with their grandparents' clothes found in a trunk in an attic, there was a special feeling about it. There was a ton of laughter and joy as we clomped around together, trying to find these characters inside ourselves. Even in the early days, there was love and trust and faith.

Faith that we could pull off an ambitious schedule despite most of us never doing a feature film before. Faith that everyone would do everything they could, not for money, but for each other.

Trust that difficult or dangerous film characters or situations could be played in a way that caused no distress or discomfort on the set, that everyone involved felt safe.

Love that uplifted everyone, supported everyone, carried everyone on through difficult situations and scenes, long nights and early days.

I'll never forget this. I'll never forget the people.

I have so much love and respect and fucking gratitude for everyone involved and to be chosen to have a part to play. I'm proud to have witnessed such incredible performances, absolutely artful camera work, sheer dedication, and people time and time again finding something within themselves they didn't know they had. I'm grateful for the love and trust given to me. I'm proud of what we did, as a found family, together.

I love you all so much. Better get used to hearing me tell you so. ❤️

it's always so rewarding to see a film that i've worked on screened infront of a group of fellow artists and creatives, and watching the other finalist films left me feeling so so inspired:)

it was especially special getting to watch @mjproductions2629 jeffrey harvey, the mega talented director/writer of "you stole my boyfriend" accept the leighhigh valley filmmaker award in a very full-circle moment! 🥹

despite the intensity of the project itself, this was an unbelievably fun collaboration & set day—swipe for some behind the scenes stuff :)

excited to share more about YSMB when it gets released publicly! 🤗

This week, for the first time, I won an award at a festival. I've had films I directed get nominated, I've had people who made my movies win awards, but this was the first one with my name on it.

Honestly, it feels weird. I'm super grateful to the Allentown Film Festival for this honor. Means more than I could possibly express. But I saw all the films screened, and at first it was difficult to see what would make mine stand out and be the one awarded in its category. However, seeing the credits is where I find the answer.

From day one when Andie Seyr and I were talking about the idea, to when my regulars Steve and Stephano agreed to record it for me, to when Nicole's audition came in and I knew she was the right choice to play across from Andie to when my good friend and newly adopted frequent collaborator Caitlin Warner stepped in, this project continued to grow in quality and fun.

They are the reason this was made. They are the ones who deserve this award.

To the Allentown Film Festival, thank you for choosing me. I was truly shocked when you said my name. To the cast and crew mentioned above, thank you for all the hard work you have done, are doing, and will continue to do. To my fellow filmmakers, both onstage with me and out in the rest of the world, you guys are awesome, and your movies inspire me.

And to @davidt00lan, who took home the grand prize in the whole category, congratulations! It was well-earned; Misinformation Age is a masterpiece.

Our final shout-out of You Stole My Boyfriend goes to one of my most frequent collaborators to date. @stephano.inc and I got in touch back in 2023 when I was seeking a sound person for MJ Productions first project, Where the Hart Is. He unfortunately already had a gig the days we were shooting, so he could not do that one, but I was very impressed by our initial interaction that I have been bringing him onto projects ever since.

Stephano has recorded sound for me on four different projects now, and he always leaves a phenomenal impression! His quality of work is impeccable, and he always brings a fun and professional vibe to the set. He's always where he needs to be, has a great attitude, and is an excellent communicator, which is something I value highly! I also have gotten extremely positive feedback from my actors every time I work with him, as well as my crew people.

Everyone speaks highly of Stephano, and in my opinion, that is well-deserved! I had the privilege of working with him on Sunday again, and it was once more an amazing time!

Keep being the best, Stephano!

On Sunday, I hosted a private screening for the cast and crew of Torments. This project was my favorite one I've made to date, as well as the most meaningful. It's also the one that took the longest, in a way, since its origins trace back to 2020.

This film was quite literally a dream come true. The premise came to me while I was napping, and then years later when I was pursuing expanding the script, those expansion ideas also came to me while napping. It's a haunting story about a girl who is trapped by her own world while being forced to live in ours. My hope for all who watch it is to experience many different emotions: courage, heartbreak, fear, longing, uplifted to name a few. But when it comes to behind the scenes, this production was filled primarily with one emotion: joy.

This was fun project to make. Ideally all films are fun to make, but this one was something special to me. With it being a @jardenfilms project, that means that right off the bat, some of my very favorite people in all the world will be involved, and so will @sirwesley4photography. From Zoom meetings that were professional and perky, to jokes and memories being formed on set, to absolute love and support at the premiere, it is a special group, and I'm so honored that they all accepted my pitch to make Torments and trusted me with half of the reins.

My other half on this shoot was @jtkalavoda. I have wanted to co-direct something with Jesse for years, and while he has held many important positions in past projects, this was the first time we directed something together. His passion and energy are unmatched, and you could tell throughout the process how much he truly cared about the project, as well as the people involved. Jesse leveled this film up from what it would have been if I can flown solo, and I am forever grateful to him for that.

And then there's the cast. All the actors were chosen not just for their talent, but based off how we thought they would gel with us and each other, and every single one delivered both in spades.

I'm out of room for this post, so I leave you with this: choose joy. Always.

When it came time to hire a cinematographer for You Stole My Boyfriend, @steve_dp_jones was a no-brainer to bring on board.

Steve is the director of photography I have worked with the most, and for good reason. His shots are always crisp and exactly what I am looking for. His lighting setups are efficient and effective. He is fun to be around on set and always brings a professional attitude while complementing that with a chill vibe that makes him easy to work with and great to be around.

If you are in need of a DP or gaffer, I can't recommend Steve enough. He has shot Where the Hart Is, Weighted Blanket, and You Stole My Boyfriend for me, and I am certain we are not done working together.

A couple weeks ago, I had the privilege of shooting a micro short film called You Stole My Boyfriend. This was conceived during a conversation between @andieseyr and I, wherein she stated her desire to play a psychopath. From there was born a short film that is styled after a Lifetime movie about two college friends who fight over the same guy. Or rather, one of them goes psycho on the other.

Andie truly delivered on this role beyond the material I had written for her. She nailed the supportive friend with an underlying superiority complex in the first of our two scenes and then absolutely tore it up in scene two as she she let her character's true colors show. They say acting is primarily about the eyes and the crazy part is that Andie did not blink hers once while the cameras were rolling. It was incredibly unsettling and so impressive to witness.

Even more so if you know Andie in real life. She is truly one of the kindest, most generous and supportive people I know. She's incredibly down-to-earth and truly wanted everyone on set to have an easy time, just constantly putting the needs of others above her own.

It was a delight to work with you, Andie, and a privilege to get to see this side of your talents. My only regret in the edit was that I could only include one of your takes of each line, because you always provided me with multiple amazing ones.
