As I go into Miss Virginia week, I wanted to take a moment to talk about what Share Your Sparkle is all about. My mom used to say I “leave a little sparkle wherever I go” because she’d find sequins from my dance costumes all over the house after a recital. Those sparkles were a reminder of the special moments and memories from happy times onstage and backstage surrounding a performance.

And all of those good memories were made possible because of some very special people…my dance teachers, coaches, and mentors. The people who poured into me over the years, beginning when I was just 3 years old. They helped me discover my love of dance, encouraged and challenged me to reach my potential, and believed in me even at times when I didn’t yet believe in myself. They shared their sparkle with me in every dance class and rehearsal. I still remember notes, corrections, encouragement, and feedback from specific classes or rehearsals from decades ago!

So now, whenever I dance, there’s a little bit of each of them reflected in me. So to all of my dance teachers from over the years, thank you for your dedication not just training dancers, but encouraging people to be their best versions of themselves. This is something I think about whenever I have the opportunity to teach a class myself - you never know whose life you may touch in even one class! In her book, Misty Copeland refers to her mentor Raven Wilkinson as “The wind at her back,” and that analogy stuck with me. So to all my dance and fitness teachers and mentors, thank you for being the wind at my back on my journey, and I’m thinking of each of you this week as I take the Miss Virginia stage this week!✨
