I became a personal trainer almost a decade ago.

At 24, my passion was great, but my naivety was greater. The title meant more to me than the work did. I had plenty of zeal, but I did not yet understand what was required to be a personal trainer.

Looking back, I wasn’t ready to work at a big-box gym, but found myself there. My excitement faded quickly when weekly sales meetings focused on revenue, prospecting, and converting people into clients.

I thought I was there to help people become healthier and more capable. At the time, I lacked the maturity to understand that helping people and making an earnest living did not have to oppose each other.

Eight months later, I got fired.

Jaded with a bruised ego, I left the fitness industry altogether and became a firefighter. I then assumed my chapter as a personal trainer had ended.

But fitness found its way back into my life.

I joined my department’s peer fitness team, got recertified, and helped improve the fitness of our personnel and incoming cadets. What I once thought I had left behind was quietly blossoming in a different environment.

Then my wife and I moved, which meant stepping away from firefighting for a season. While waiting for the opportunity to return, I decided to work as a personal trainer again.

I mean, it only made sense, right?

At 33, it feels different. More genuine. I understand the responsibility better now. I also understand something my 24-year-old self could not: I can help people, take the work seriously, and be compensated for doing it well.

The person in the last picture chose a direction. The person in this picture is still discovering where it leads.

God writes stories that we only get to read one page at a time.

Pain is a privilege. Well, this kind is.

This is a throwback to February of this year. I had the opportunity to run my first full marathon. I did a 22 week build to cross that finish line. Prior to this training block I had been sidelined for 5 months because of a sports hernia.

Those 22 weeks transformed my belief system. The theory of discipline disappeared and was built by each run I completed. Each run completed made a deposit in my confidence that my goal was achievable. These moments taught me that confidence is developed through the work that I put in.

This was the hardest 22 weeks of my life not because of the training but because of the character it required to sustain this level of output. As a husband, I made a promise to my wife it wouldn’t impede on our relationship. Which means I had to make the decision and run at odd times, and yes it hurt. But when that moment came to cross the finish line I cried, I had finished the race. I didn’t finish within my time goal, but more importantly I did what I said I was going to do.

This was a journey I learned to enjoy. 🤍
