“We learn from our failures.”

This is the quintessential messaging behind GC Corporation, a company synonymous with the glass ionomer cements we use in conservative and minimally invasive dentistry.

In a world where creativity is often underrated, and AI is playing an increasingly influential role in research and development, the capacity to fail, learn and try again remains paramount. Innovation must be driven by curiosity and a genuine desire to understand how we can better serve the people we intend to help.

Beyond having the opportunity to indulge my inner dental nerd, and my love of the art and science behind our restorative materials, it was a pleasure to connect with fellow dental aficionados, appreciate what happens behind the scenes, and learn alongside Australian and other dental citizens of the world.

Day one in Canberra for Dentists on the Hill 2026. Dentists from around Australia met with MPs and Senators across the political spectrum, including Dr Monique Ryan MP and Senator Helen Polley, to push for one thing: release and fully fund the National Oral Health Plan, sitting on the table since late 2024.

We're asking to get on with solutions that actually work, for dentists and the patients we treat.

Proud to represent Victoria in these rooms today with some amazing clinicians: John Sheahan, Matthew Lim, Greg Morris, Susan Wise, Neil Hewson, Conny Qian, Andrew Gikas and Mihiri Silva.

Darwin born and raised - and on the Hill talking teeth and oral health.

Territory dentist Dr cajuntchia was at Parliament House this morning, joining dentists from across Australia for the inaugural Dentists on the Hill.

We talked about making dental care more accessible and affordable - particularly in regional areas like ours in the Territory - where they’re needed most.

Thanks to Kaejenn, Dr Denise Salvestro, Dr Mark Hutton and Dr Amit Gurbuxani for dropping by.

Ceramic veneer replacement

This patient presented with 6 short ceramic veneers that were no longer meeting their aesthetic expectations. Treatment involved 10 new ceramic veneers, with lengthening of anterior teeth to suit the lower lip line.

Maintaining the lingual wire added complexity to the preparation and placement process, but removal and replacement was avoided in the interest of keeping orthodontic stability intact

Owning a dental practice was never a ‘dream’ of mine. But as life would have it, I found myself in a situation where I had to take the leap. And it has been one big giant leap.

I am grateful to all the people who helped me, and for all the lessons I’ve learned (sometimes
the hard way) over the years.

As an Advocate for Oral Health, supported by @colgateanz, I share ten tips (or hard-
learned lessons) that helped me get to where I am now. If you’re considering practice ownership, do you think you have what it takes?

And if you’re already in the thick of it, what other tips can you share with our colleagues?

AI in Dentistry 🤖🦷 — A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of convening a symposium with some of the brightest minds in our field at the Australian Dental Association Congress in Perth. Here are a few key take-away messages:

1️⃣ Ethics: We must ensure AI is trained to promote equity, maintain privacy, and support practitioner competency. Patients must also understand and consent to how their information is used.

2️⃣ Accuracy: Current models like ChatGPT are probabilistic—predicting likely outcomes. A shift towards more deterministic (evidence-based) models may enhance reliability.

3️⃣ Equity: AI requires enormous data volumes for training, yet can still miss outliers. Synthetic data generation may help reduce disparities and misdiagnoses.

4️⃣ Expertise: Know the limitations of each AI tool. These technologies are assistive and still require professional oversight and expertise.

5️⃣ Legality: Ensure AI tools comply with regulatory frameworks. In Australia, that includes TGA and AHPRA. AI must be fit for purpose for both your patients and practice.

This symposium was just a teaser of what’s to come—but it was an incredible opportunity to introduce AI concepts to colleagues at the ADA Congress.

A heartfelt thank you to Drs Vanessa Cho, Marta Revilla-León, Ken Hooi, Tom Huang, and Tami Yap for your insights and contributions. 🙏 Thanks also to Kaejenn Tchia for chairing the session and to Dr Grace Sha who captured the ‘group shot of the day’! 📸
