📍Cal Rutherford
RHP // Central Michigan University

Strength & Size do not always equal optimal output. Great example here as Cal joined our HP Summer Training as an already polished starting pitcher with the ability to command the zone with 3 pitches and run his FB up to 91mph. The questions we had to ask…

• Why does velocity decrease as pitch count increases?
• What is the weakest link?
• How do we optimize the balance of velocity AND longevity?

The answers were 4 main aspects
➡️ Increase PPO (Peak Power Output)
➡️ Compacting stride length
➡️ Increase Rotational Ability
➡️ Find 90 as a byproduct, DO NOT chase it

As Cal approaches Week 5 of his training, we are seeing results slightly earlier than expected - a raised floor of velocity in sub-max mound days, increased power output in the weightroom, and an overall improvement in HOW he uses his STRENGTH during peak force windows. It’s always exciting to see our dedicated and talented athletes setting goals and crushing them week by week.

Some other positive results, by the way
✅ Increased longevity & recovery
✅ Larger range of motion
✅ 90mph feels “FREE & EASY”
✅ FB IVB up to 23.4 inches (usually was around 15”)
✅ Spin Rate avg. increase of 150RPM

Today’s Player of the Game is Cal Rutherford! The Eastern Michigan Eagle had a great day on the mound going 4.2 innings, allowing only 2 hits and 1 run, while striking out 6 Battle Jacks!

Player of the Game is brought to you by Trinity Elite Sports Performance
