@calderclark gave me the great honor of connecting me to her incredible family to capture this wedding at @grandfathergolfandcountryclub with @maryagnesmiller and @katelynpinnerstudio - if I thought one Calder was fun, TWO Calders are even better. Enter Calder's niece, Mary Calder and her new husband, Wilson. The sharp wit, vivacious personality and southern hospitality are a family trait that the entire crew seems to share and I felt lucky to get to soak in such a special weekend filled with so much heart and beauty. ✨️Being able to go to sleep in my own bed was a special priviledge, but getting to chase Mary Calder and Wilson around (literally) was a highlight of my season. What a gift to be there - you all are as funny as you are beautiful, and as kind as you are intelligent. What a wicked combination. Thanks for having me.

This summer, I traveled to Middleburg and Upperville, Virginia to join the @verandamag Design Society for a tour of Virginia hunt country, including rare access to Bunny Mellon’s legendary Oak Spring estate and an insider tour of @glenstonegardens.

I came home with so much inspiration, and a long list of details I want to pay more attention to in my own garden.

And it got me thinking: What makes a garden feel truly extraordinary?

At Oak Spring, I loved the stone and brick pathways softened by plants, the restrained palette of white, silver, green, and lavender, and the way containers, botanical art, and even painted floors help connect the house to the garden.

At Glenstone, it was the garden rooms for me. Massive boxwood hedges, paths, centuries-old trees, and sculptures divide the landscape into outdoor spaces that feel simultaneously grand and cozy. We even attended two inspiring lectures outside, surrounded by the gardens.

Two very different places, but both had me noticing the same things: meandering paths, aged finishes, textural hardscaping, and the repetition of color and form. All the choices that help a garden feel connected to its home.

Thank you to VERANDA for such an inspiring few days in Virginia hunt country! And thank you to the awe-inspiring designers who shared their expertise with us @charmossny @davidharbersculptures @calderclark @tonybaratta @rudythedecorator @degournay and of course @redfoxinntavern for your hospitality!

Turns out, great design likes good company.

This bride came with an incredible eye for interiors and a clear vision for color. We looked to the property’s landscape for the custom pergola, and somewhere between the two, the whole reception found its footing.
