After days of driving through never ending landscapes dominated by olive tree mono-crops in bare soil, I’m glad to have made it to this little piece of heaven. @passeite_azeite is doing it right. This abundance of grass, rich soil and healthy trees is due to the proper rotational grazing practices, cover cropping, tree diversity, no-till and the avoidance of agrochemicals.
The common approach in olive tree plantations is to strip the soil bare of any weeds and grasses that are thought of as competition for the main crop. What farmers seem to forget is that biodiversity equals healthy living systems, and healthy systems equal healthy food and products.
While there’s competition in nature, a healthy ecosystem balances itself out, and its benefits far outweigh those of one that’s been stripped of its capacity to function correctly. Weeds and grasses allow for life to thrive in the soil and therefore set the stage for a healthy system. Bare soils cause the loss of topsoil, the inability to retain water, erosion and the loss of life in the system.
Only life can produce life.
Keep the ground covered.

Family update: for the next undefined number of months I’ll be traveling around with @analaframboise and these two sweet little people in search for a piece of land to build a house and homestead in the Spanish or Portuguese countryside.
We’ve simplified our material possessions and commitments to the least possible and will be moving into a caravan in the following days.
More farming, more cooking, self-sufficiency, simplicity, more nature and more time together as a family is all in there, that is the life we envision. But first we’ll have to find that place where our souls feel at home.
We’ll be visiting places, people and projects that inspire us and hope to find a lot of teachings along this journey.
Ana and I have resurrected our old shared account @almazan_fernandez to share this journey with all of you, so head over there if you wanna tag along. ✌🏻🌲

What a window to the world! 😍

I adore this window, its shape, and how it opens. ✨ 🦋

And the books and trinkets on the sill. 📚 🕯 🪔

Would you like a window like this in your home? 🏠

Yes or no? ⬇

Who has always dreamed of having a library in your home? 🙋🏻‍♀️ who would like to have this one specifically? 🙋🏾‍♂️ you can never go wrong with the classic Eames chair but I’m especially loving it in this space! And we don’t even have to mention the window here because clearly, it’s dreamy. It reminds me of looking through a telescope and brings me all sorts of feelings of adventure, exploration and free spiritedness. Can’t get enough of this cozy corner 🤍
