In the Lyft home after my bday dinner & dancing, I thought, “I want to dance some more”

Now mind you, it’s March.

So back at home, I whipped up a little iPhone set of my favorite R&B and House songs, with deep cross fades and played everything loud and danced around the house my grand-mère gave me in silver sequin birthday pants until morning. It was special.

Woke up the next day, filled with that I-can-really-do-whatever-I-want confidence that generally accompanies that birthday (y’all know the one😝) and thought, “My word for the year is FUN and I should throw a party… and DJ!”

I went to my collection of forgotten toys, found the controller, unearthed an 11-year old old MacBook Pro, astonishingly had the right cables, weaved together a cute selection of songs, designed the SECRET SET flyer, told two of my brothers the plan…………………..

and chickened out. 🥴

I didn’t feel ready to DJ for a crowd. I was being hard on myself about my transitions. And a little voice was like, “girl, you can’t just beeeee a DJ. You only did two gigs, 8 years ago. Be foreal. You’ll mess up.” And I believed it 😵‍💫

I let that voice yap for weeks, and just dropped the idea. I broke a promise to myself 😬

Not sure what happened exactly, but the therapy and psychology books and “do it scared” posts hit all at once. I powered up.

Pitched the venue owner, put a new date on the flyer, and pressed play ▶️

I KEPT A PROMISE TO MYSELF! 6 months later, but ✅!

And that’s the story. That’s how I decided to start DJing again after two gigs, 8 years ago 😌

I just wanted to dance more and thought maybe a few friends might want to dance with me.

… and I did mess up. Had to re-start Charity’s D-Mix at the top of my set — nerves. But I pulled it together and had a gorgeous group of humans ballrooming on East Warren, in a coffee shop, after a tornado. So blessed 😌

Merci from the deepest parts of my heart to every friend that stepped through the door or even wanted to and couldn’t (something special for you soon).

Here’s to keeping promises to ourselves 🫂

We closed out the night with this song and I meant every word of what I said 🤝🥰🙂‍↕️🙂‍↔️💃🏽🕺🏽🪩🎧🎤

I asked OG how often he plays golf.. He smiled, and said “every day — because at home it’s just a lot of honeydew…”

New life goal unlocked.
