We’re Inspired by how Janne Kouri turned one of the hardest moments of his life into a mission that has positively impacted thousands of others.

After a spinal cord injury left him paralyzed, Janne learned that insurance-supported rehabilitation often ends after only a few weeks, even though the need for care continues.

He turned that gap into @nextstepla - giving people living with paralysis access to advanced rehabilitation, fitness, and a community built around possibility.

Nearly two decades later, NextStep has helped thousands pursue greater health, independence, and quality of life.

We’re proud to call NextStep an Inspired partner. Meet Janne and hear his story.

20 years ago today, Janne Kouri sustained a spinal cord injury.

Two decades later, that injury has become the starting point for a mission that has changed thousands of lives.

Through NextStep, Janne has helped build a movement around a simple but incredibly important belief: people living with paralysis deserve access to the rehabilitation, fitness, resources, and support that can help them live long, healthy, fulfilling lives.

Since 2008, NextStep has:

• Helped more than 2,000 people improve their health, recovery, independence, and quality of life
• Supported 300+ individuals and their families every month
• Raised more than $8 million in support of people living with paralysis
• Opened paralysis training centers across the U.S. and internationally
• Become the first community-based center in the Reeve Foundation NeuroRecovery Network and the first community-based center to offer Locomotor Training in the U.S.
• Helped inspire additional facilities and communities to expand access to paralysis rehabilitation
• Built programs supporting wounded veterans, people with limited financial resources, and wounded Ukrainian soldiers
• Helped people go back to school, start new careers, drive again, get married, start families, and, most importantly, build healthy and happy lives

And that last part is what makes this story so special.

Because the impact of NextStep isn’t measured only in centers opened, dollars raised, awards won, or headlines earned.

It’s measured in what happens when someone who has been told their options are limited gets access to the right support.

A new career.
A drive to school.
A wedding.
A family.
A stronger body.
More independence.
A life that keeps moving forward.

Janne, 20 years ago you experienced something that changed your life.

You chose to build something that could change thousands of other lives, too.

Today, we celebrate you, the NextStep team, every member and family who has walked through those doors, and the people who continue to push this mission forward.

20 years. Thousands of lives. And a whole lot more work still worth doing.
