If someone had told me a year ago that I would make it this far, I probably would’ve laughed.
A year ago today, I was getting ready to leave Rome and move all the way to IOWA… I was honestly terrified, and I didn’t have many expectations for what this year would look like. I was convinced I’d end up going home earlier than planned because of how homesick I thought I would be. Instead, I find myself going home three months later than I was originally supposed to.The truth is that during a football game, I looked around me and suddenly realized how lucky I was to get to experience something like this and to be surrounded by such amazing people. I think that was one of the moments when everything started to change for me.
I’m so thankful for every single person I got to know this year, even the people I don’t talk to anymore, because someways, everyone taught me something about life or about myself and made me a better person.I still remember my first day of school. Between the people who thought I was a bot and the people asking me if I ate pizza and pasta every day, somehow I survived . The first week was definitely tough, but there were people who made everything so much easier. Now, I get to call those people my best friends, even though “friends” doesn’t feel like a big enough word to describe the relationship we have.Bella, Emma, Carly, Lilly, Mavrik, Kaia, Courtney, Taylor, and Kiersten. I genuinely consider these girls my sisters. They never let me feel alone, not even for a second, and no matter what happened, we always went through everything together. I don’t think they’ll ever fully understand how much they changed this experience for me or how much they mean to me.I also want to thank all of my teachers, who were always there to help me, made me feel welcome, and somehow made going to school something I actually enjoyed.
And lastly, I want to give the biggest thank you to my host families. A very special one goes to the Craig/Laborde family. Whenever I talk about them, I don’t even introduce them as my “host family” anymore, I just leave out the “host,” because somewhere along the way, they became my real family.
