#fallforcostume2024 day 17 is Fantasy!!

Maybe I went overboard on this one 😂 but I really do think of what I do as creating magic. In one way or another, for myself or for others, I bring to life ideas and memories and imagined realities.

I just left costume design class, where we had our first swatching day. The room is filled with bins and bins of fabric scraps of every variety, and we were told only to find a fabric for each garment needed to create the designs we’ve started sketching. (Anything! In the whole room!) I left with a stack of tiny pieces of green and brown wool, dark red orange and blue lining fabrics, grey pinstripes, and a couple white shirt fabrics in my hands, and there is something very wrong with the amount of joy I experienced looking at the whole little jumble. Magic means something different to everyone I guess 😂

It’s been a year!

I kind of can’t believe all the things that happened between January and today 😆. The video is quite long (consequence of both an eventful year and an absolute banger of a song) but I hope y’all will watch it cause I spent way too long editing it- twice, since Instagram decided to crash right when I’d finished it the first time.

I tried to tag everyone who shows up in photos. I think I got everyone 😆

I am incredibly proud of my and others’ work on our production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and I hope I will have the chance to do many more things like this in the future. It was the highlight of my high school career- I’ll miss you, @chelsea.theatre .

Every costume you see here was designed and made by me, with the exception of the wire wings (thanks Rachel 😘).

“Mustardseed- Your faith is legendary. You have brought tears to my eyes on more than one occasion. I will be needing your assistance.”
-Bottom, A Midsummer Night’s Dream

We are almost finished! The next to last character feature is Mustardseed, played by @a.va6343 . These pants were the first completed garment made for a fairy. They have three layers (all out of various terrible fabrics 😑) and I WILL be making some similar ones for myself because OMG look at them. And as much as I complain about the fabrics, I was really lucky to find such good colors (and sparkly!) of netting and such in the costume room. This one came together almost exactly as I pictured it (see my sketch on the last slide) which was very exciting.

“Wind, and flood, and fog, and mud now plague the earth because your stubborn anger burns against me.”
-Titania, A Midsummer Night’s Dream

It’s character feature time! @annierivers_ did an incredible job playing Titania, and she looked positively regal in this shiny, flowing dress. Titania’s dress was a slightly hap-hazard construction; the fabric frays like NOBODY’S BUSINESS, and it’s INCREDIBLY delicate and generally annoying to work with. The skirt is made entirely of various sizes of squares, basically draped all over, and the bodice was HELL to sew. I would not wish this fabric on my WORST enemy.

… but anyway… it eventually turned into something that looks like a pretty dress, at least from a couple feet away with a corset over it 🤣. The corset embellishment was kind of improvised, (I used more of the hell fabric, are you all proud of me? 🥲) and all I can really say is now it is a corset. This costume could have been such a disaster 🤣. But…

At the first show, when Titania walked on for the first time, I heard a tiny little gasp, and that tiny sound lives forever in my heart now 😭.

“Cobwebs are always good to stop bleeding. If I cut my finger, sir, I will be quick to call upon you.”
-Bottom, A Midsummer Night’s Dream

The next character feature for midsummer is Cobweb! @snakesareradical played cobweb, and rocked this pirate-inspired costume. Cobweb too wore a sash heavily embellished with shiny things- darn pirate’s been doing some plundering, I suppose 😂. I was super excited to find fabrics for the sash that so resembled actual cobwebs 🕸️!

I have of course included some behind the scenes photos, and my sketch. :)

Editing photos is slow y’all. Sometime soon I wanna do character features or something. I wish I’d gotten some more photos but I’m also kinda surprised I got as many as I did so here we are 😆.
