Headed to the @koortsfilmfestival to watch The Magic Orange as part of their ‘Ever. After’ programme on Thursday night. Crazy to see it up on the big screen alongside seven other beautiful weirdo freak films! Making this bite sized stomach churner fully reignited my love for acting. The beginning of many afternoons mucking around in front of Ali’s lens —-

I like to think I’ve kept up with cinema releases…so here are the films that have stood out to me this year. I am still needing to see ‘Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma’ and ‘Coyote vs. Acme’, which I predict I will enjoy. How many of these have you seen, and what are your thoughts? 🎥

‘Obsession’ was genuinely terrifying, and I’m saying that as a horror lover that rarely gets unnerved by media. Seeing indie creations becomes massive hits is my favourite thing, and I cannot wait to see what Curry Barker directs next. From the performances, to the gore, depth of themes and score, ‘Obsession’ is easily in my top 3 of this year.

‘Pizza Movie’ hit me harder than I expected. A wild, silly time, this comedy-stoner film was a colourful riot from start to finish, with enough pop culture references, kickass action sequences, and heartwarming friendship moments to keep me and my friends sufficiently entertained.

It is no surprise that ‘The Odyssey’ was as impressive as it was. Directed by Nolan, and starring some of the industries most versatile actors, this Greek mythology retelling had me hooked. Whilst quite lengthy, I would have easily accepted another half hour, to an hour. The cinematography and sound editing is worthy of an Academy Award.

‘28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’ is a better movie than its predecessor…there, I said it! Exploring the relationship between Samson and Dr Kelson, whilst being utterly flabbergasted by how insane Jimmy and his crew were, were massive highlights. Shocking, and well-paced, I need them to keep extending upon this universe.

Kiwi-nation rise up! ‘Mum, I’m Alien Pregnant’ is a sci-fi comedy horror that was wickedly fun. Directed by duo THUNDERLIPS, this film explored bodily autonomy, parental boundaries, sexual exploration and staying true to your values. The body horror, and chemistry. was amazing. I was lucky to get to watch this ahead of its cinema release.

I cried. Yes, ‘The Sheep Detectives’ was so heartwarming, and humorous, and I am in need of a rewatch as soon as possible. Hugh Jackson and his sheep make up the story of the year.

‘Project Hail Mary’ might be one of the most technically impressive films of 2026. Ryan

The Ungrateful Tenant premiere! A masterful and hilarious silent film by @conor_bowden, scored by an incredible live orchestra. It was a definite highlight of NZIFF, which I had the joy of doing photography and videography for! If you haven’t had the chance to see it yet, I would definitely recommend scooping up some tickets for the 12th of August!!
