Congratulations to CENG Electrical Engineering Mustang Yen Nguyen, who will represent Cal Poly at the CSU Wide Student Research Competition along with 9 other Mustangs! 🐴

Yen is a graduate student researcher working with mentor Professor Payam Nayeri on their project, Wideband Dielectric Resonator Antenna with Perforation.

Ever wonder how your phone handles fast, reliable signals? Yen’s research fine-tunes antennas by carefully adding tiny holes / perforations into the material, allowing them to handle more data at once → resulting in stronger connections that are small, flexible, and cost-effective! This is the backbone of next-gen wireless communication, and Yen is helping build it right here at Cal Poly! 📡

Have any questions or need support? Please visit the Student Research Hub in Bldg. 38, Room 101 or book an advising appointment in our Notion Link within our bio! 💚

Cal Poly was selected as one of just 22 universities nationwide for Apple’s inaugural Next-Gen Innovators program.

At Cal Poly Noyce, mentorship is built one-to-one. It’s built for impact.

Through this year-long experience, our students are paired directly with seasoned industry engineers and professionals across a range of technical fields. They’re building projects, receiving candid feedback, and refining their work alongside mentors who apply these skills every day in real companies.
This isn’t passive exposure. It’s real experience.

Students learn how to adapt their technical foundations to a changing workforce, how to navigate evolving career paths, and how to think across disciplines. They gain perspective from professionals who have translated classroom knowledge into real-world innovation—and who understand the complexity of doing it well.

For Noyce, this partnership reflects our commitment to applied computing and interdisciplinary learning. We prepare students not just to participate in the future of technology, but to shape it thoughtfully and responsibly.

We’re proud of the students representing Cal Poly in this inaugural cohort.

Today’s Noyce Spotlight Highlights Cal Poly NerdFlare!

What is Cal Poly NerdFlare? What does your club do? Who may be interested in joining?

NerdFlare revolves around the design and building of badges, which are PCBs with an artistic design. Badges can have LEDs, communicate with other badges, etc. What the badge does and what it looks like depends on the person creating the badge; their creativity fuels the process! We encourage members to create their own badges and should they have any questions about what to do or how to do it, we will be there to help them. No prior experience with badge-making is required! We also created a team badge last year that we then distributed to alumni, faculty, and even the mayor of SLO at Cal Poly’s 2025 Alumni Wine and Beer Garden event.

Are there any upcoming events or projects your club is working on?

We are developing a PCB art piece to be displayed in the MEP study room and we are currently brainstorming ideas of what the art piece will look like as well as the electronics that will be used in this piece. A subset of the team is working on this project, but anyone can join. We are also in the early stages of creating our next team badge, which will have some sort of scavenger hunt functionality.

How can students get involved? Where/when do you meet? How can students get in touch?

NerdFlare meets every other Monday from 7-9 PM in 192-333. We have an Instagram page with a pinned post outlining the dates for all of our meetings this quarter; there are also a variety of links in our bio, such as a donation link, a GitHub link for checking out some of the previous badges we have created, and a link to our Discord server. The Discord server is our main line of communication; members can ask for help with their badges there.

WISH Members Attending the Grace Hopper Celebration! 💻

This week (November 4th-7th), members of WISH (Women Involved in Software and Hardware) had the opportunity to attend the Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC) 2025 in Chicago. GHC is the world’s largest gathering of women and non-binary technologists.

Thanks to generous funding from the Computer Science and Software Engineering (CSSE) Department, part of the Noyce School of Applied Computing, these students are exploring one of the world’s biggest career fairs, along with inspiring keynotes, technical sessions, and networking opportunities with leaders across the tech industry. ✨

We’re proud to support student organizations like WISH that empower women in computing and help foster community and growth in tech! 💚💛

Bright suns! Interested in building an audio animatronic? 🤖

Come to our first meeting for this year's BLUE SKY project — a full-scale DJ R-3X! No prior experience is needed to help join and work on this year-long project. This project will be less time restrictive than REC is, but will still require some degree of commitment. Students will be able to gain experience with real world technical and creative challenges in the industry.

Please remember to fill out the project interest form first before attending meetings! The link can be found in our bio.

The first meeting is this Saturday, November 9th from 10 AM to 12 PM in Engineering IV, Room 134. All other project meetings will be every other Saturday unless otherwise stated by the BLUE SKY committee. ⛅
