One of the most hopeful and beautiful and practical episodes Ive released in a while. You can make new friends by building very tiny houses... and male hrowing wine easier (and more enjoyable) too. This is about viticulture where everybody wins. LIB

Poppy and Yarrow are back with four baby owlets. 🦉

Our resident barn owl pair returned to nest in the box at the Lodi Wine Visitor Center’s demo vineyard this spring, and this year, they’re raising four chicks.

Barn owls are one of the most effective tools a Lodi grower has against vineyard pests. Gophers, voles, and mice cause serious damage to vines and root systems. Barn owls are natural predators of all three, and a single family can consume between 3,000 and 4,000 rodents per year.

Researchers from Cal Poly Humboldt and UC Davis are now actively monitoring more than 200 nest boxes across Lodi and surrounding areas, tracking how barn owl populations grow as more growers bring them into the farming system.

Last Thursday, they came out to measure, band, and name all four of Poppy and Yarrow’s chicks: Maple, Sequoia, Hemlock, and Sage.

Proud to announce the lab’s newest research paper about how barn owls reduce the number of rodents — and make them scared! “I’m on the hunt, I’m after you…” Big thanks to former grad student Katherine Larson, UC Davis collaborator Roger Baldwin, and the many vineyards in Napa that made this work possible!

Meet Poppy and Yarrow!

For the second season in a row, this bonded pair of American barn owls have returned to the Lodi Wine Visitor Center nest box to raise their young.

Barn owls play an important role in agriculture by naturally controlling rodent populations. They help protect one of California’s most important commodities–winegrape vineyards! By installing nest boxes, farmers support owl populations while reducing the need for rodenticides. Cal Poly Humboldt and UC Davis researchers are currently monitoring over 300 nest boxes across Lodi and Napa Valley as part of this ongoing research.

Now, with a camera inside one of these nest boxes, you can watch it all, from feedings, to chick growth, and daily owl life as it happens.

Follow along with @calpolyhum.barnowls and check out the link in their bio to catch more of this charismatic pair and their chicks!

⚠️ All owls are handled and monitored by trained professionals with proper state, federal, and institutional IACUC permitting.

One workshop. Three layers. Underground → Aboveground → Sky.

🔥 Biochar — wood waste transformed into "luxury condos for microorganisms." Water+nutrient retention and delivery, long-term carbon storage. With Eric Mayer (Napachar), Stanford PhD turned biochar producer.
🌳 Hedgerows — pollinators, beneficial predators, water storage, windbreaks. Plant selection, establishment, and how to access funding incentives. With Zach Heyman (Farmhand Foundation).
🦉 Birds — a single barn owl family eats 3,000–4,000 rodents a year. Bluebirds clean up insect pests. Prof. Matt Johnson's (Cal Poly Humboldt) research across 60+ vineyards shows how to make birds the backbone of chemical-free pest management.

Practical. Field-ready. Not to be missed.
