From starting as a solo photographer, to then building a video production company with a PHENOMENAL team behind me, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for this journey and all the lessons I have received along the way. Friendships developed to the mistakes made. Awards recived to the financial losses. Ups and dows... all of it made us into what we are today! “The Shoes That Just Won’t Quit: A Love Letter to My 2017 Vans” When I picked up a brand-new pair of navy blue Vans in 2017, I thought I was getting a good deal—$30 for shoes that could pass as both semi-formal and casual. At first, they did their job perfectly. They saw me through family gatherings, church, and even my best friend’s wedding. Little did I know, I was about to drag these shoes through way more than their intended “mild-mannered” life. In 2018, I packed my trusty Vans for a whirlwind trip through Europe and Brazil, then Central America, and finally the Caribbean. As the miles piled up, so did the wear. Little rips started appearing, and pretty soon my toes had their own scenic view of the world. I got used to the breezy ventilation and wore them proudly on rocky trails, cliff-jumping, white water rafting and rock climbing. They may not have been waterproof, but the seams were bursting with character. After a lot of loving abuse and plenty of “time-to-throw-them-away” hints from family, friends and significant others the time finally came. Determined to give my Vans a second life, I found a yard of fabric printed with little flags, fit for such traveled shoes and after some DIY magic my shoes were nearly good as new and ready for the next round of travels. They joined me for more Europe and the Caribbean, then Asia, Africa, and, unexpectedly, a hostel mix-up in Iceland, where a brave Czech traveler even returned them to me weeks later in the Czech Republic. One of my favorite photos is of those shoes dangling above a crystal lake while paragliding with some friends in Switzerland. The Vans look almost custom-made—proof of what a little TLC and a lot of miles can do. Now, almost eight years after I bought them, they’re reaching their limit once again: the soles are barely there, the laces are hanging by a thread, and the stitching is coming apart. Once more, friends and family are urging me to toss them out, but I can’t help thinking…maybe it’s just time for some new soles. In studio earlier this month with the one and only Andrew Reed and his team at Red 5 Productions. I met Andrew a couple years ago through a mutual friend. While in that moment I immediately knew we would be friends, I had no idea the impact he would have on me as a friend, father, and man. Andrew is an incredible father, friend, and brother.
