A memorable opening for Echoes of Us: North Carolina Storykeepers at the Cameron Art Museum in #Wilmington #NC !

I’m delighted to have my paintings included in this meaningful exhibition, curated by Brenda Miller Holmes, which celebrates the artists who preserve stories, honor cultural heritage, and reflect the many voices that shape North Carolina.

📍 On view through May 23, 2027, at the #CameronArtMuseum

Presented to the community by the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation’s Inclusive Public Art Initiative.

I always love the opportunity to return to the @camartmuseum Connections program, a creative experience for people living with dementia and their carers.

One of the things I especially love about this program is getting to connect with people I know through other community partnerships in a different way. Seeing them explore the artwork, share their responses, and connect with one another and with me through music is such a joy.

There’s something special about bringing music and art together in a space that inspires curiosity, creativity, and connection.

Whether we’re singing familiar songs or spontaneously creating music together, each experience unfolds in its own unique way.

I’m grateful to be part of a program that creates these opportunities for connection, creativity, and meaningful experiences in our community. 💜 🎶 🎨

@camartmuseum had the most fun and interactive exhibit last month! Wedding photos with silver "clouds" floating around? This was a once in a lifetime opportunity and made for some unique wedding photos. 🤩

I visited the Cameron Art Museum in my hometown of Wilmington to see my painting in an exhibition of the museum’s collection, but hadn’t expected to encounter so much of my childhood on its walls.

Claude Howell’s Musicians was donated by Shirlee Gearhart, my ninth-grade art teacher.

A 1976 photograph of Howell by Philip Henry Morgan Jr. offers another glimpse into that history. Howell helped establish UNCW’s art department and credited painter Robert Gwathmey as an early influence. Gwathmey’s son Charles, a lifelong friend of Howell, later designed CAM’s present building, which opened in 2002.

Minnie Evans’s visionary Sunset/Sunrise (1970) offered another extraordinary interpretation of nature and imagination.

Hiroshi Sueyoshi’s Sculptural Vase (1988) reminded me of his widow, Jane Tierney, my orchestra teacher, who inspired me to take up guitar after studying violin.

Jack Berkman’s Untitled (Downtown Wilmington) (1983) was donated by Andrew and Hathia Hayes. Hathia was my mother’s thesis advisor at UNCW.

Seeing my own painting enter this collection brings these connections full circle. Museums preserve not only artworks, but the generations of teaching, friendship, and generosity behind them.

Grateful to everyone at CAM for sustaining these histories.

Back home in Wilmington, North Carolina, and a particularly meaningful visit to the Cameron Art Museum, where I finally had the opportunity to see my painting How Could Hell Be Any Worse? (Red Aurora) (2024) installed with the permanent collection.

Wonderful to spend the afternoon with Ben and Heather, whose commitment to artists and to the cultural histories of southeastern North Carolina continues to inspire me.

The painting’s title nods to Bad Religion’s 1982 debut LP, How Could Hell Be Any Worse? The apocalyptic urgency of early American hardcore feels increasingly prescient against the backdrop of climate catastrophe. What was once a rhetorical provocation becomes an unsettlingly literal question in the face of increasingly destructive wildfires. The title borrows a question from Bad Religion’s 1982 song “F*ck Armageddon… This Is Hell,” whose critique of pollution and human destructiveness feels increasingly prophetic amid the climate crisis.

The painting belongs to an ongoing body of work exploring the intersection of landscape, ecological transformation, and environmental justice. Its layered surfaces of metallic and iridescent pigments shift with the light, suggesting the unstable atmospheres, incandescence, and material consequences of fire.

The work was acquired in memory of Georgeann Haas through the Claude Howell Endowment for the Purchase of North Carolina Art.

Georgeann was a remarkable artist whose work Theresa and I had the privilege of exhibiting through the Palladium/Athena Project. It is particularly moving to see my painting enter the collection in her memory, and to encounter her work again in the galleries.

There is something profoundly meaningful about returning to the place where I grew up and finding my own work becoming part of its artistic history.

Deep gratitude to Ben, Heather, and everyone at CAM for their generosity, friendship, and commitment to sustaining the arts in Wilmington.
